I have a GML file can I import this file into microstation in an easy way. I used to get shape-files which where easy to import into dgn but more and more I get GML files is it posible to convert or attach them easy to a dgn-file?
Aleks
Hi Aleks, GML is geography (GIS) format and as such is not supported by MicroStation. GML is supported by Bentley Map directly. If you have no access to Bentley Map, you can download GDAL (trac.osgeo.org/.../DownloadingGdalBinaries) and to use ogr2ogr application to convert GML into other format (e.g. SHP)). In fact GML support in Bentley Map is implemented using exactly the same library. GML is substantially more complex format than SHP, so in my opinion it's not a good idea to convert GML into SHP, but if you know GML contains only primitive GIS geometry, it should work. Otherwise some other format supported by ogr2ogr should be tested. With regards, Jan

Geography Markup Language (GML) is an XML grammar. MicroStation can't read that format. It needs to be translated. You can adopt Jan's suggestion and use Bentley Map, or a third-party tool such as FME.
Presumably you're looking to import some map data?

Hi Aleks,

Thanks for your confirmation the issue is solved now. QGis is good choice as it provides a proper GUI on top of ogr2ogr functionality. Be aware in a case you will need to automate the translation (e.g. because of more files), ogr2ogr.exe tool is installed in QGis bin folder (and called at background when a conversion is required), so it's easy to call it from own batch file.

It's also done by ogr2ogr I guess. But the main conversion question remain: Are the formats equal? If your GML files are "GIS files", many formats can be used without data lost. But if your GML files are like "CityGML files" so they are 3D and 3D elements are described in GML, it's not so easy. And because DXF is not able to store element attributes, it's usage is limited. On the other hand, if the geometry is primary issue, DXF would be enough a it's generally accepted.
With regards,
Jan

Can you go back to the provider of said gml files and ask what other outputs they can make , they may even be able to make dgn ... a lot of GIS packages can now make DGN or DWG not just shape files... worth asking
