Dynamic Views to dwg viewports

I have a lot of sheet files that consist of sheet models with Dynamic Views attached through the drawing models.

When I convert these files to dwg per client requirements, the dynamic views from drawing models are not referenced via a viewport, they are merged into the sheet model. This is both with and without reference clip by element. Neither are coming across in a viewport. Only merged directly to the sheet.

If I attach the same saved view that is attached into the drawing model, clip that by an element, then the conversion of the clipped reference is a viewport.

The workflow is to attach the drawing model and not the saved view. So the question I have is, how do I get viewports to appear in the converted dwg from the attached dynamic view drawing model and not attach saved views?

  • ACAD does not have drawing models - it only has the default design models and sheet models. If you want to deliver DWG files with viewports, you will have to attach your default design model into your sheet model. Drawing models and non-default design models can only be saved as separate DWG files or merged. Your current workaround is perhaps the only way to get DWG viewports.

  • Is Bentley going to provide an ability to push the dynamic views/drawing models that are referenced to the sheet to a saved view in ACAD or something to allow an conversion to be seamless? This specific workaround is not the documented workflow that I have ever seen. I was always trained and told to bring the drawing model into the sheet.
I understand the limitation of ACAD in this but I am sure that I am not the only one that has ran into this issue or even knew of a workaround such as the one I found.
    Thoughts?

  • Also, in my workaround, the saved view being placed into the sheet to get to a viewport based dwg is not maintaining the clipping planes set by the dynamic view. Once converted to dwg, the clipping for Front and Back or turned off and the distances are set to 0.00.

  • It seems like an interesting idea to composing the ACAD workflow from the drawing model workflow.  I suppose that a utility or batch processor might be possible to convert from a composition of drawing models to a set of files each of which only has the default design model + sheet models, which then can be saved as DWG files and used in ACAD.  While some intelligence could be lost in the file re-composition(the Design Links for example) the basic graphics should be retained.  Might be worth of starting a thread in Ideas?

The clipping issue might be a different problem than viewport.  Can you send me your DGN file with this problem?  You can either upload your file to Secured File Area or send it to me(don.fu@bentley.com) so we can take a look at it?

  • The workflow I follow when having to hand over a MS/PS ACAD environement (with Dynamic Views). Is I have the models referenced into a "Master Model" area, and leave the default blank. I cut the views I need with the callouts and created the desired Drawing Models. From there I reference those Drawing Models into the Default Model, and then into the Sheet. That was when I do a Save As to ACAD I get the views in the Sheet appearing as viewports. The Default is with the file as the Model Space, and the Sheet is there in the Paper Space.
It is a slight annoyance to have this stepping stone, so I make it a point to find out if the client indeed wants that or not. If they just want graphics that they can open in ACAD then you can just save the sheet to ACAD with all the refs merged.
