V8i Win 10 compatibility, roll back, or recommend CONNECT

Started uppgrading our workstations to Win 10 and V8i users are not happy. They report two problems, reference rasters from existing projects are not carried over in Win10  and fonts are altered, even our company logo has taken a hit.

A fast look into the forum discussions left me confused so I am hoping for some educated guidance.

-Should i recommend the company to switch from V8i  to a Win 10 compatible program, and would that be CONNECT ?

-Would it be better to just roll back to win 7 and 8.1.

Both MicroStation V8i SS4 and MicroStation CONNECT are certified for Windows 10.  Having said that, I don't believe that anyone else has reported on this Forum the problems with raster location and fonts that your users see.

MicroStation V8i SS3 and earlier are not certified for Windows 10.

  • That is an odd set of problems to encounter after an operating system upgrade. From the symptoms you describe it sounds as if some MicroStation configuration files got moved during the upgrade.

As Jon stated, there are two versions of MicroStation certified for Windows 10, MicroStation V8i SS4 and MicroStation CONNECT.

Upgrading to MicroStation V8i SS4 would definitely be the easier migration path for your users as it is most like the earlier SELECTseries releases.

You haven't said if your company uses other Bentley products with MicroStation such as InRoads, GEOPAK, Descartes, etc. None of those are available for CONNECT as of yet so that would preclude you from moving to that version. The interface is also quite different in the CONNECT edition of MicroStation so your users would be very unhappy with you for a entirely different set of reasons should you decide to go that route.

  • Thank you Rod and Jon, your answers give me hope. Will dig into the matter instead of throwing the towel on Win 10. I will start with checking the versions of our V8i and paths for rasters and fonts configuration files . Just realized that we do pay a fee for Bentley support despite of newer using it , perhaps now is the time ( it is in another country so there is language barrier ).

Not necessarily!  Bentley Systems have support staff from many origins.  There are language-specific Forums here on Be Communities, although I don't think there's a Finnish Forum.

  • Hi Rolf,
I have had the same dilemma last year, I had to precisely define my usage of MS products and to find what of "mines" waiting on me, but when MS V8i has SS4 certificated for win10, I completely migrate to win 10 with V8iSS4 and MS CE U1, without any crucial problems /sometimes some "defaults" from older versions had new values/, only problems what I had they were with some drivers of some older devices which I had to change.
