MS CE Update 2 IS STILL slow

Sorry to say but I was under the impression Update 2 was going to be faster.  Sadly its not.

I still have to remove the DGNWS files and the recent files to gain speed. This is with simple 2d files.

I have looked at the list of enhancements provided in this forum and none mention anything to do with this issue.  I now have a long standing client that has stated they will NOT upgrade to CE, due to the speed, plus they will not sign up for Select on their next renewal date.

  • That doesn't surprise me in the least.
    SS4 is the last V8i, they're not even going to fix the bugs in that release for an SS4u1.

    Bentley seems to think they're going to simply move everybody to CE when moving to CE makes their customers less productive.
    Expect more than one client to ask WTH they should keep on paying SELECT fees when their productive software of choice has simply been discontinued.
  • OK here is a snippet of my tests;

    Software;

    MS V8i SS3 08.11.09.459

    MS CE 10.00.01.13 & 10.02.00.39.

    Workspaces are networked to the same server

    • V8i = I:\Bentley\V8i_SS3
    • CE  = I:\Bentley\CONNECT

    DGN file for the test is the same project and same file;

    Project path; H:\PROJECT01\01 CAD\01 MODEL 2D\PLAN\

    Project File;  Plan Ground Floor Level.dgn NB. This is a 2D file

    I have carried out a series of speed tests with V8i and various CE builds.

    Open MS  3 times first thing in the morning (to MS manager)

    V8i

    • 1st launch    = 10 seconds
    • 2nd launch  = 5 seconds
    • 3rd launch   = 4 seconds

    CE

    • 1st launch    = 18 seconds
    • 2nd launch  = 15 seconds
    • 3rd launch   = 26 seconds

    Open the same DGN as above path (this file is heavy in detail and contains 11 references files to nest depth of 2)

    V8i

    • 1st   = 8 seconds
    • 2nd = 2 seconds
    • 3rd  = 2 seconds

    CE

    • 1st   = 10 seconds
    • 2nd = 16 seconds
    • 3rd  = 12 seconds

    The workspace are very similar in structure

    Workspace   = Organisation

    Workspaces = NA

    Worksets       = Projects

    Users             = Users

    All tests were carried out at the same time of day, over a period of 30 mins.

    Another client with the same workspace structure has speeds in excess of 60 seconds to open the files, compared to 5 seconds in V8i

    As you can see CE is slower in all areas.  It might not seem much but users do complain about its performance.  In some cases it just freezes for 30 seconds and then jumps into life.  I have asked Support t log this for me.

  • Have you tried those files with SS4? Maybe it's mostly the CONNECTION client that's slowing things down?
  • Could you please do the same test with files on local machine with Connection Client closed.

    Turn OFF “Launch CONNECTION client every time I log into my computer.” and exit/close Connection client.
    Connection Client Options

    If both the following issues are reproducible (consistent) then we will need to troubleshoot. We may have to collect some logs. I will get back to you on this.

  • We are seeing similar issues when opening DGN files using CE in a networked environment. I have a local CE environment on a test machine that opens files within seconds of opening the same file using SS4 everything being local to the test device. However, opening the local DGN file with the configuration being networked has shown significant, like 2 minutes, time for the file to open.
  • I wanted to provide an update; I was originally deploying the environment via a Microsoft DFS share, once we deployed the environment outside the DFS share, we were able to obtain the normal access times.
  • CMEuser.......Can you explain that again please... you lost me
