Inconsistency with group holes between V8i and connect

Group Holes work differently in V8i and Connect. In V8i I can group separate shapes together as a group hole in order to extract a total combined area. In Connect, I can only group hole shapes which intersect each other!

Regardless, Group hole areas as above created in V8i, do not report consistent areas.

First image is V8i, showing, grouped holes with area field function attached to notes.

2nd image shows the same drawing opened in Connect. All areas now report the same and Wrongly. If I attempt to create a field to display the area in Connect, the value is just plain wrong also.

  • Having created a Group Hole and placed a Note using a Text field picking up the Group Hole element area properties using v8i SELECTseries 4 and opening the same file in CONNECT Update 2 I see the same result in both versions.

Which versions are you using ?
Was a Text Style used ? Is it a Text Style from a DGNLIB that match in both versions ?

Could you post a sample file illustrating the problem your seeing

  • Hi Carl,

I have tried in SS4 and SS3 and am using Connect U2.

The note is using a text style from a dgnlib which is available to both versions.

The original file that I referred to was made up of a lot of references, with the annotation in the live file. When I flatten the file, the majority of areas now report correctly when opened in connect. I have zipped up the original file and it's immediate references which include the group holes (not including the full nested paths)

0501C_p_Insulation-All.dgn is the master file. 0501C_p_Insulation-All - Copy.dgn has been opened in connect and displays incorrect areas.

    Note areas errors.zip

  • Hi Duncan,

Thanks for posting the files I am able to reproduce with this dataset and am exploring with development and will get back to you.

Observation: When the file is opened all fields are updated by default as seen in the message center, if 'undo all' is used , then these text fields are displayed as V8i. If the file is opened in V8i and 'undo all' is used then these text fields display as they are in CONNECT.

  • Thanks Carl,

I get the same when using undo all after opening. However, If I open in connect, allow the fields to update, then close and open in v8i. the fields do not update to V8i anymore.

Another point, Are you able to create a group hole from separate elements in Connect, ie elements that are not touching. I can select the required elements, but on accepting the group hole does not create.
  • I am able to create Group Holes using CONNECT Update 2, are you perhaps in a 3d file and the hole elements are not coplanar with the outside element. In this situation you should see a message in the message center.
Are all the elements in the same file ?
Is it element(s) specific ? ( What happens if you just place 3 rectangles in the same model are you able to create a group hole )
