File locks up while executing MDL verifydgn repair

We are having a problem with a file and haven't been able to fix it.  There is a certain model in a file that we know is causing the issue, but we can't do anything with that model or the file locks up.  We have tried the usual fixes of Compress, Fix Range, and Verifydgn Repair but the file still locks up no matter what we try. I even tried the old school trick of trying to reference copy the geometry into a clean file, but Microstation locks up even when you just select the model to try and reference it.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what else to try, so we can salvage this file?

Thanks,

Kevin

  • Hi Kevin!
Please tell us what version of MicroStation and OS W 7/10. (I will ASSUME you are in V8i)
If you can open the Model you can try the File Fence FF=DestinationFile.dgn.
You can also try to translate just that Model to another file (dxf/dwg).
You can create a new empty dgn, and copy the Model into that new dgn. At least, if it works, you have a file to work on, and you can remove the bad model from the original file.
If it might be a Reference issue in the bad Model, you can try the Command Line Argument "-O" to open the file without loading References.
Can't really say any of these would work, but might help.

I Hope This Helps Someone Reading This!  (Intergraph>PseudoStation>MicroStation user since 1980's)

  • Hi George, I am running V8i SS3 v08.11.09.357 on Win 7 Pro. If I could open the model I would have tried the FF= command, but the drawing locks up when trying to open the model. I also have tried the get into a clean file/reference and copy method. Microstation locks up the instant you select the bad model in the reference dialog box. We can access any of the drawings that the bad model has referenced to it without issues. Converting the file to DWG locks up as well. I've seen many a corrupt file through the years, but this model in this file is the worst I have ever come across. Since I didn't get a reply from Bentley (and EDG doesn't exist anymore), I think we're going to just redraw what was in that model and move on. Thanks for trying to help though.

  • Is this a design file you have been working on for a while or is it an old one that you have gone back to make modifications?
Did this issue just start occurring recently or has it been a problem for a while?
Is it just this file that you are having this problem with?
Would you be able to supply this file for us to try and repair using other methods?
If you are concerned about providing it in such a public forum you could post it to the secure location.

  • Hi Andrew, this is a recent file that started having this issue about a month ago. Right now this is the only file that we have had this happen to, but our concern is that we have many other drawings that have basically multiple copies of the same model in them. I have uploaded the file for you to look at to see if you can figure out what happened to it. We would like to know what is wrong with the file so we can try to make sure that the problem doesn't occur in the other drawings we have. Thanks for your reply and checking into this for us.

  • Thanks for supplying your DGN file via the secure upload area. I have been able to successfully open this design file using MicroStation V8i SS4 but it was displaying an error message relating to Large Level Name Dictionaries.

Large Level Name dictionaries were encountered.
1 references with more than 2000 entries in the Level Name Dictionary were found.
The largest Level Name Dictionary was 13702 entries, in file zShop Tickets - DT BackUp.dgn
Performance may be significantly improved by compressing zShop Tickets - DT BackUp.dgn and all reference files.
Use 'Compress Options' from the File Menu, with the 'Include References' option, or the 'COMPRESS DESIGN INCLUDEREFS' keyin.

Generally, you would be using the Compress Options under the File menu to rectify this type of issue but I have tried to compress the file and it locks up MicroStation. I have even just tried to change to another model within the file and it locks up the software. I have also tried repairing using other tools available to me but cannot get it fixed.

Typically we would always advise to perform regular backups of your files either via a configured network backup schedule or even just by using the key-in BACKUP. We would first suggest if you have scheduled network backups that you try to retrieve the design file via this method.

If this is not able to be retrieved we could escalate this to be investigated internally. To potentially recover the file, please provide the following information:
    - Was this file opened from a network drive?
    - What was the environment (local machine OS, server OS, etc.)?

You've alrerady provided to corrupt design file so if you could also try to provide the following:
    - A backup of the file in question.
    - The workstation's Exception history:
    - The machine's system and application event logs.

    To get the exception history:
    1. Open a good file.
    2. Key-in: $ % "$(ms_tmp)"
    3. Gather entire "ExceptionHistory" folder. (Typically there will be 5 folders, but there could be more; please send all of them).

To get the system and application logs:
    1. Go to Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer
    2. Expand "Windows Logs" (in XP: "Event Viewer (Local)”) folder.
    3. Right-click on "Application" and select "Save All Events As…" (in XP: "Save Log File As...").
    4. Give it a name and save.
    5. Repeat steps #3 and #4 for "System".
