This issue has been debated many times in this Forum.

NVidia driver software is unreliable. There's no way to tell which drivers work with MicroStation without trying them. Sometimes the latest driver doesn't work and it's necessary to drop back to the previous good driver.

I agree that it's a pain. But the pain is introduced by NVidia, not MicroStation. It just happens that MicroStation enables the problem to be seen.

You might take note that, as far as I know, AMD Radeon graphic cards don't have that problem. Or, should I say, no-one who uses Radeon graphics has reported a similar problem on this Forum.

Sorry Jon,

the updated Graphics Driver is what causes the problem, it's by no means the solution.

Sorry but in my case upgrading driver did not help - newest nVidia driver has similiar issues than the older ones - it does not work properly with older nVidia cards (in Microstation or Viewer). Only replacing card with another could help or..... setting the variable - so it is a solution indeed ;-)

That's a work-around, not a resolution. When that variable is set it tells your graphics card to revert to an earlier version of Microsoft DirectX. The real solution is to update the graphics card driver software as José suggests.

Setting QV_D3DVERSION=9 resolved the problem :-)

Did you upgrade to Windows 10 with an older machine with an NVidia Graphics card?

Update graphic driver to the latest one, change graphic to a new one or use windows override environment to dx9:
