Swap views between windows?

I have a two-monitor, two application window setup. I love it. I primarily work on one monitor, while the other holds a lot of dialogs, palettes and an extra view window or two.

Every once in a while, I will be working so that my main monitor has my working "area of interest", while the view on my second monitor shows another area that I'm using for reference. I'd like to be able to "swap" views, so that when I'm done working on area 1 I can start working on area 2, maintaining area 1 on a view as a reference. Basically, I'd like to switch things around to show area 2 on monitor 1 and area 1 on monitor 2.

Can I do that?

I know I can copy a view from one window to another (use it all the time), but that only works one way. I can get what I want through a process of Copy View/View Previous. I was just hoping there was some kind of one-click wonder for this.

  • Very useful keyin to add to function keys

Window ChangeScreen View 1- will change the application windows that view 1 is in. You can add others like Window ChangeScreen View 2. I have my F1 function key set to switch view 1 because some people in our office work on the right screen. Most of us use the left screen as the main working area.

  • I am aware of that keyin - I use it a lot when I get into drawings for the first time to set them up "right". I guess I was hoping that I wouldn't have "physically" move the windows from one screen to the other. Around here, most people set up View 1 to be the "plotting" view with overrides and levels on/off (not my preference but there it is). I'd hate to run into any weirdness stemming from my accidentally leaving the wrong view on the "wrong" monitor. I was hoping there was something that would just swap display, not actual view windows. but thanks, that would give me something close to what I want.

  • It seems like you want the application windows to swap screens rather than just the View Windows 1-8. If you want the application windows to switch then I think you would need some 3rd party software or display card utility where you can define which monitor application windows are displayed on.

It's confusing because you talk about view 1 and needing to physically move windows from one screen to the other. The keyin I provided will swap the view (1-8) windows from one screen to the other without needing to physically move them (other then pressing a button).

  • I want the view windows to stay right where they are (View 1 in Application window 1 on Monitor 1 and View 2 in Application window 2 on Monitor 2). I want the area, what is SHOWN in each view to swap, so that view 1 shows what used to be in view 2, and view 2 shows what used to be in view 1.
Your solution actually moves views between application windows/monitors/screens, and that is not what I want to do. That could create confusion with some of the rest of my coworkers if I forget to set everything back the way it was.

  • Mary, did you try my key in?

For what you want: open a 3rd view and with the keyin copy the 2nd view to the 3rd, then the 1st to the 2nd
Finally copy 3rd to 1st. Close 3rd view. Done.

  • Yes, I use the copy view keyin all the time. I was hoping for something that didn't require as many clicks and views - more of a one-click solution. I'm looking into VBA now...
