Element Handles Aligning to View

Hi,

Posted this in Visualisation but realise that's the wrong place for this query so I'll re-post it here:

I'm running SS3 08.11.09.459

As of this morning element handles are aligning to my view when I place cylinders, rather than staying in the alignment that they were drawn in. I am expecting the outer handle that defines the radius to stay aligned to the axis it was aligned to when I created the element. For example, if the radius handle was aligned to the Y axis when it was created, I expect it to stay aligned to the Y axis regardless of my view position.

As far as I recall I have not changed any settings. I created a new 3D drawing with the default 3D seed this morning and that is when I first noticed something was different.

The video below also shows how sometimes MS toggles Alt when i grab a handle. By default i expect to adjust the radius of the entire cylinder, now its turning the cylinder into a cone.

This behaviour is the same for all existing cylinders in the drawing and all new cylinders that I place.

This screen grab may also help:

I'm getting two sets of handles for the same element selection. The handle direction indicated by the red arrow shows the tow origin points i placed when creating the cyulinder, that's all i ever want to see. If i go to isometric view, i no longer see the origin handles of the element. I end up seeing an outer handle that is aligned to my view.

I've never seen MS do this before. Is there a setting like, align element handles to view or something like that?

  • Hi Josh,

How are you doing the Tentative Snap? Centre wheel (for a wheel-mouse) or any other key combination with includes Alt key?

I believe this occurs after pressing Alt key before activating Select Handles.

what happens if you select other cylinder element and  press Alt key and afterwards activate the Select Handles from element selection? Can you now modify the radius for the entire cylinder?

    Regards

    Maria

  • Hi Maria,

It's not so much about the editing of the cylinder but more about the alignment of the element handles in the view.

I've just checked again and my element handles still move with my view alignment. The same thing happens on my colleagues computer.

I must be going crazy because in all my time doing 3D MS I do not recall ever noticing this.

This has been the handle behavior for a cone element for quite a while (I don't remember what MS/J did). Maybe the other elements where you had different handles were circular extrusions or smart solids?

What the cone handles are attempting to do is make it so that no matter the view rotation, the radius handles don't overlap the center/height handles. You didn't mention what problem this causes?
