detail styles

i'm just getting into detail styles and they are great but when i place a section, elevation, or detail - i get the following error in the message center "maximum dependency callback iterations exceeded" when i try to modify the blue direction arrows or the green clip boundaries (in the section marker)... no idea what this means or how i can get around it.

it also appears that i can not have more than one 'section callout' type per style (see attached image)?  our standards dictate that building sections look a certain way while wall sections look another.  it would be handy if i could just have two section callout types and be able to choose which one you want to place with the 'place section tool' via drop-down list in the tool settings dialog box.  just mho...

any help?

open a1-1a and place a section callout anywhere.  i have setup ia_symbols in the ia_standar.dgnlib file so you should be able to select that style from the tool settings dialog.  once placed, try and edit any of the things i mentioned in my original email.

let me know if you need anything else.

    thanks chris.

  • Thanks for the test case, and I did reproduce.  Do you see this error only when placing a section callout?  If yes, do you see this when selecting a 3D reference as the target model?  Regarding the latter question, what value do you see in sectioning a 2D reference?  Would you provide a use case?

  • >>Do you see this error only when placing a section callout?

yes.  the elevation, title, and detail tags all can be modified post-placement

    >>If yes, do you see this when selecting a 3D reference as the target model?

nope.  i attached a 3D file and all worked great.

    >>what value do you see in sectioning a 2D reference? Would you provide a use case?

it is so much easier to place a section call out tag with this tool.  currently we use cells and we have to place them, modify the directions,  and we have 4 different cells.  one for each direction (up, down, left, and right).  this tool you simply select the reference, and two points and you are done.  no placing cells.  and - the saved views associated are handy if i wish to attach reference by saved view.

i realize they are meand for 3D drawings... but i would like to utilize their power with 2D drawaings until we bit the bullet and start 3D modeling for our porjects.

  • 1. Using callouts in 2D workflow

As you noted, the full power of section and elevation callouts is visible in the 3D workflow. They automatically create and manage saved views for you. They create saved views that are oriented perpendicular to the view in which you create the callouts. For example, if you create an elevation callout on a plan view, it creates an elevation view for you. The elevation view is associated to the callout. If you modify one, the other is updated automatically. As you observed, this is really a 3D concept.

In 2D, you can still make use of the other features of detailing symbols (fields, links from callout to drawing title, annotation scale support, etc.) by simulating the association between the callout and saved view. But you need to create the saved view manually. Here're the steps.

    a. Open the 2D elevation drawing. Create an saved view around the drawing using the Create Saved View tool. For consistency, pick Elevation View type in toolsettings.

    b. Open the 2D plan drawing. Create an elevation callout. In the toolsettings, turn OFF "Create Elevation View" toggle.

    c. Right-click on the elevation view in the Saved Views dialog and select "Associate Callout". Select the elevation callout. Now, if you hover your cursor over the elevation callout, it will display the name of the elevation view - indicating that they are associated.

    d. In the elevation sheet, when you place the elevation view as a reference, turn ON "Drawing Title" toggle. It then creates a drawing title along with the reference. It also adds a link on the elevation callout to help you navigate from the callout to the elevation sheet. Additionally, it updates the fields in the callout with information about the elevation sheet.

The above setup gives you all benefits of callouts, except controlling the saved view's orientation/extents.

    2. Detailing symbol styles

A detailing symbol style is a group of settings for each type of detailing symbol. If you want to have two groups of settings for two types of section callouts, you will need to create two styles.

  • thanks susan.  i was planning on using them as such but i was only noting that i was getting an error that didn't mean anything (to me) in my message center.  it could have been something serious - i didn't know.  but - i do think that the seciton tag should 'work' as the others do in a 2D environment.   again - thank you.

    >>A detailing symbol style is a group of settings for each type of detailing symbol. If you want to have two groups of settings for two types of section callouts, you will need to create two styles.

then you really should consider adding a different 'wall section' callout versus a 'building section' callout.  i have never seen a wall section tag that is the same as a building section tag - and it makes perfect sence for them to be in the same 'style' - imho.
