CE - Why do I need worksets to use Sheet Indexes?

Why do I need worksets to use Sheet Indexes? We don't and have never used Projects or Worksets (there is no benefit for us) but would still like to use sheet indexes. I'm sure that you can use SI in SS3/4 without using projects.

  • Hi Stuart

Actually all you need a project DGNLIB. The way you have MS setup ie no worksets, actually limits the power of MS. If you had them set, you can control what is loaded per project ie sheet indexing, project specific seeds, templates, reports, output folders levels etc.

This means a workset could control which dgnlib is loaded per project.

Question: How do you arrange your project on your network? Do you have a simple structure 0001, 0002, 0003 etc, do you date them, do you group them by client or discipline?

  • Ian. That's were Bentley don't get it. We need all resources loaded for every project. There is no difference. We don't have any project specific items. We do use an exported folder per job, but browse (and then directory history) get you to this folder very quickly.

Our Projects are ordered by number - 11000, 11001, 11002, etc, with each job folder split into the various discipline sections.

ok - so it seems you have the working designs (DGNS, etc...) grouped together.

While the rest of the resources can be shared by all projects, this is not the case of a sheet index. It is specific for that set of DGNs and cannot be shared across the whole directory structure of projects you have. It has links, etc... that are specific to a particular group of designs.

So in this case, if you want to use the sheet index, you will now have a project specific item/resource.

Correct. All within the overall project/job folder.

OK. That's a shame though as the chance of changing the office workflow is not going to happen. How come you could do this with SS3/4 without projects?

In my opinion you need to rethink the way you are using MS and consider Worksets. There are more benefits than not. In a simplistic manner you could create 1 workspace and 1 workset. In each project have a dgnlib that that project will use for Sheet indexing
