Connect Edition - Thoughts?

So far, I've avoided installing any of the CE versions though I am tempted to do so to see how it compares to V8i possible to replace it however, I have noticed from this forum that there many posts about problems with it so I'm beginning to wonder just how bad is it? Looking to hear opinions from those who use it each day.

  • Hi
    I really like it.
It has more bugs than v8i, but this is getting better for every update. At this point i rearly ever use v8i any more and i prefare the connect edition for several reasons. It is 64bit and can handle alot larger geometrys ( once the geometry has been loaded in to MS ), it has some new tools and workflows. And i prefare the ribbon and the pop up menus etc in connect edition after having gotten used to them.

Once you get over the shock, its actually very nice to use. there are some productivity issues ie learning new shortcuts, but in general its a nice tool.

Depending on what you normally do inside MS, you can add greater functionality ie

    Items
    Reports
    Tables
    Display Rules
    Parametric modelling 2d and 3d
    Sheet Indexing
    Print Organizer
    Explorer
    DWG 2017 support

A big one for me is the Workspace & Worksets, once you get your head around them its very powerful

  • Sounds interesting so far. I'm also used to Revit so I'm particularly interested in Parametric cells. I'm hoping they work like Revit's Generic Model Families with custom instance parameters as I could potentially have a need for that in the near future. I don't mind ribbon apps, no doubt you can customise it just like the V8i Task interface can be (which I originally hated as I started my career using a digitising tablet with no requirement for on-screen toolboxes but after that broke, I had to adapt to a mouse and the task interface was the best option for a custom GUI). I'm just concerned about the amount of bugs there is and the unknown of when they will actually be fixed.

Items - Used to add data to items so that we can report on them, change their colours etc , ie fire rating, Door IDs.
Display Rules - Used in conjunction with above to enhance level overrides ie show in red all fire rating walls

So I've created a door/frame group (2D0 and made it an 'item'. How do I change it's colour, not using ByLevel symbology and Level Manager?

Looking at Help I should be able to get to Display Rules from Display Styles but I don't see this option.

  • OK I've found Display Rules which actually has a rule from when I was testing this with the EAP! The door that I have created is on a level which according to the rule set should turn the colour from white to red, but doesn't!

You don't make anything an 'item'.  You first define an Item Types schema (similar to a database schema or tag set defintion).  Then you attach item data defined by that schema to your graphic element.

In your case, you might define (or have your MicroStation support agent define) a door schema.  Then attach item data from that door schema to your doors in a DGN model.  Once you have one or more doors with item data attached, you can use MicroStation's built-in tools to create door reports and place tables.

  • You can also open or import revit RFA cells in to microstation connect. The import does not always keep the variations intact but it's getting better.
