Yes, it was unfortunate MicroStation installation consisted from two separate files at this time: The prerequisite and MicroStation itself. It's common problem of users they do not save both and when they need to reinstall MicroStation, they have not complete installation set available.

As Andrew wrote, newer V8i versions and current CONNECT Edition do not have this problem, because they download all necessary installations (Windows updates, VBA engine...) automatically.

I do not remember what this version of MicroStation tells, but to be precise it's "Prerequistes for MicroStation 08.11.09.829".

As I wrote earlier, you have to contact Bentley technical support and ask them to send this package to you. Or, if you know some big MicroStation user near to you, IT staff in companies is usually aware of this fact and they build archive of Bentley installations.

As Jan Šlegr suggested, it is always a better idea to raise a new question to the MicroStation Forum rather than hijack one that is over 4 years old and not necessarily related to your question.

The version of MicroStation V8i (SELECTseries 3) you're trying to install is no longer supported and would not be certified for use on a new system most likely with Windows 10 installed. We would strongly suggest that you should be installing the latest release of MicroStation CONNECT Edition (Update 16), or at the very least MicroStation V8i (SELECTseries 10).

Desktop Applications Support Policy

Many of these old versions required a Prerequisite Pack to be installed prior to the main installation which is no longer required as it is now included with the main EXE file you download. If absolutely required I can try to get authority from my management to provide another method of downloading this Prerequisite Pack but we would still suggest that you should be installing a certified and supported version of MicroStation.

it's recommended to do not re-open and extend old discussion (this one is 4 years old), because usually a context and conditions have changed in a meantime (product versions, Windows etc.), but to ask in a new post.

As Jon wrote, all necessary information was discussed in the thread.

Moreover, your question is weird a bit, because the version number you mentioned looks more like MicroStation version (V8i SS4 in this case), not Prerequisites Pack version (I think the latest was 08.11.09.03).

You did not tell why you need the prerequisites pack. This pack was required by old products, I guess the latest version was V8i (SELECTseries 3), released 9 years ago. These versions are not supported now (see the support policy page) and are not available for download anymore. You should contact Bentley Technical support directly (using Service Request form) to ask for help.

Have you attempted to install MicroStation V8i? Did something go wrong that leads you to believe that you might need a pre-requisite pack?

Jan, what you say is true but I'm trying to get all the answers before I start. I know that most users would have just got in and done the job but I'm not confident with the workings of my computer. I have used MicroStation for 18 or 20 years and I'm competent with that but not with the workings of my of my computer. In my opinion such question and discussion is time wasting effort, because nothing else than "what may happen in a future". How anybody from Bentley can provide you relevant information now what will be Bentley policy in future? But my experience with the most of software companies is that when support is contacted with clear proof of license validity, they are try to help, especially if it requires nothing more than to copy something from archive.

Also this discussion have taken longer than to create the deployment image and be safe from loosing access to Bentley pages..

If not Bentley, you can always ask here in Bentley community (or whatever communication tool will exist in a future) or contact local TMC (if exists in your country) or local Bentley partner. There are so many options and many people have old MicroStation installation in their drawers ;-)

Yes from the assistence covered by SELECT agreement, but you can always contact any company with any question or request ;-) And it will be a test of the company quality, because only foolish company will reject to communicate with "old customer", because such contact (hey, may I ask you for your product installation, I have license already) is the proof the user is still active and as such is a sales opportunity.

In that case it will be Bentley Systems that is being cut off without a penny (your subscription fee). If you don't pay a subscription, you don't obtain the benefits of that subscription.

Can I ask you, is it true what Jan said to me in his response following yours, that if I own a valid licence but will not have access to download pages (because I am no longer a Select subscriber), I can still ask Bentley to provide me with the installation for the owned version of Microstation.

And I add, will Bentley provide it for me?

I had assumed if I stopped my Bentley subscription that I would be cut off from all access to Bentley's assistance. Cut off without a penny.

Hi Philip,

the situations you described sounds strange to me, I guess because of some confusions and mistakes in your assumptions and conclusions. In my opinion you are mixing apples and pears:

There is nothing like MicroStation with / without Deployment Guide. You can create Deployment Image, which contains both MicroStation installation files and Prerequisities files. More precisely, the term "Deployment Guide" is generally used for a document describing how to install (deploy) some software. So such document exists for MicroStation, but it's not the discussed topic.

I am not sure why you use "access to Bentley download" condition. It's not relevant at all. It's your choice (and also your responsibility) to decide whether you will store your own copy if MicroStation installer or not. In a hypothetical future, if you will own a valid license but will not have an access to download pages, you can still ask Bentley to provide you the installation for the owned version of MicroStation. This your decision has no relationship whether you will use standard MicroStation installation (withou prerequisities inside) or full deployment image.

The whole discussion is about two installation options:

To use standard MicroStation installer, when Prerequisities files are not included and are downloaded when the installer evaluates they don't exist on a computer and have to be applied before MicroStation installation. As was written earlier, the prerequisities are not Bentley, but Microsoft software. Internet connection is required in this case.
To create Deployment Image in the first step, where an output is a folder with all files included (MicroStation, addition modules, prerequisities...). This installation can be save e.g. on USB memory stick and used on computers without Internet connection. This option is also a way how to archive the full MicroStation installation, so in future you don't have to download anything.

As Jan and I have advised previously, all of the Prerequisites are downloaded and installed to your system via your internet connection if they are required. This is explained in the Requirements section of the ReadMe documentation under Software Prerequisites.

Software Prerequisites

The Prerequisites for Bentley Desktop Applications v08.11.09 are automatically downloaded and installed to your workstation while you install MicroStation V8i (SELECTseries 4). The Prerequisites for Bentley Desktop Applications needs to be installed on your system once, and only needs to be reinstalled if you are installing a later version of MicroStation that requires an updated prerequisite pack. The contents of the Prerequisites for Bentley Desktop Applications include:

Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.1
Microsoft XML Parser (MSXML) 6 SP 1 (32-bit and 64-bit)
Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications core
Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications localized
DHTML Editing Control for Applications

Microsoft Internet Explorer v8.0 or later with 128-bit cipher strength is also required. It is not part of the Prerequisites for Bentley Desktop Applications.

We were only explaining to your that as this installation may not contain ALL of the prerequisites, as only those that are required will be downloaded, you could produce a Deployment Image. This Deployment Image procedure ensures that ALL of the necessary files required by an installation would be downloaded and made available for ANY system in the future to install MicroStation without an internet connection. This was in reply to your request to have ALL of these files if you decide to drop SELECT and be able to reinstall of a future system.

There has been a lot of traffic on my question on Microstation and prerequisites in the last few days, thank you all.

Am I right in interpreting that if I have an internet connection and download rights with Bentley that I can load Microstation V8i 08.09.11.829 without the Deployment Guide? Microstation and my computer will go looking for any pre-requisite files it needs?

If on the other hand I want to load it on a computer at a time when I don't have download rights from Bentley, eg when I no longer have a Select subscription, I should follow the Microstation V8i (Select Series 3) Deployment Guide that I got from the link in your reply now and create a deployment guide and use it to load Microstation?

I'll have to upgrade my computer to Windows 10 before I start to try these instructions - with my son-in-law beside me because he's much more competent with computers than I am. I can use Microstation and have earned my living with it for 18 or 20 years but I'm not at all comfortable with the workings of the computer itself.

As Andrew wrote, Bentley does not provide Prerequisite Pack separately now, so it's not possible to have an installation of Prerequisities only. But I have see no reason to have it, because when you will create Deployment image, you will have one complete installation (Prerequisities + MicroStation), which I think is better.

I am not quite sure if I understand what you are asking for :-( ... Maybe something lost in translation as I am not native English speaker.

From the page mentioned by Andrew you can download Deployment Guide pdf document with the description how to create the Deplyyment Image.

Based on what I remember, the whole process is pretty simple (just choose the deployment option in the installer), but not very intuitive, because it looks like the installation is run, but the image is created only. I am quite sure it's faster to try it (start MicroStation installation and try to create the image) than to write this text ;-)

If you install MicroStation V8i (SELECTseries 4) and have a good internet connection with no issues, the pre and post requisites that are required will be downloaded to your local drive. Usually, this would be in the folder:

C:\BentleyDownloads\MicroStation_08.11.09.829

Here you should see a full list of the MSI files used during the installation. This does not necessarily have every prerequisite as many of the specific Microsoft items would have already been installed.

Whether you read through the Deployment Guide from the link I already provided or that which is available in the ReadMe file supplied with the downloaded software, you can see instructions for creating this image with all Pre and Post Requisites.

As Jan Slegr advised already, Bentley do not supply a separate Prerequisite Pack for MicroStation V8i any more, as we did with previous versions. What you need to do is either install MicroStation V8i SS4 which should automatically download the prerequisites during the installation or create a Deployment image which would also download the prerequisites. If you are having an issue downloading these prerequisites you would need to ensure you are on a PC that can connect ok

I expect to be loading V8i Version 08.11.09.829 on my present Windows 8.1 computer after I upgrade it to Windows 10 and your link will assist me to do that, but I don't expect to renew my Select Subscription next year, having been mostly out of work for 2 or 3 years. If I have to replace my pc when I'm not a Select Subscriber, how would I go about loading the Prerequisites and the Microstation files?
