Why don't the reference files not stay attached

I am working on a server from N. California, we just moved all files from project number to another completely different number. Now when I open the files I have to browse to the new folder and pick the reference. I see all of the files I need in the new folder but Microstation is not seeing them (I guess). Luckily this project is just getting started so there are not a lot of files yet but this is pretty annoying that I can see all of the reference files but STILL have to 'repath' them.

I have modified my ucf file to go to the new folder(s) which usually works but did not this time.

Any advice is appreciated!

Thank you

  • What exactly is the issue ? are the references listed in red (meaning not found) ? orrrrr are they still resolved using the original attachment path (back to the original project they were attached in) ?

  • The issue is the refs are listed but are red. I browse to the folder they are in and pick the missing ref. I can see all of the other refs in the folder but microstation does not so I have to pick every one, one at a time, in each dgn file.

  • The Top image shows it was set for the Project to a single location. The lower image shows it being set at the User level (Only you the user will see this) and it is set to 3 locations (That we can see).it will look at the first location for the file then the 2nd and then the 3rd till it finds the file (if it can).

The fact that it is on a server in Northern Cal. only affects speed it will load  The connection also affects speed it will load.

If it still can't find the Reference (Shows Red in the Reference dialog) means it couldn't find it in those locations. Check the paths and file name for problems. If you want others to see the references. It (the RFDIR paths) need to change at the Project level.

To see if the changes to the RFDIR paths work, you need to Exit M-Sta. and then reopen the file.

  • ok so you physically moved all the files to a new location and MicroStation is still looking at the old folder structure and not finding them (because they have been moved). It seems you are on the right track in setting all the folders required for MicroStation to resolve the attachments. When setting the MS_RFDIR variable are you browsing to and selecting the folder names, or are you physically keying them in ? The reason I ask is that the folder name or directory structure may be incorrect (misspelled) . After you make the change (I would suggest doing this in the PCF rather than the UCF) you need to restart MicroStation.

  • The way I get the path is open windows explorer to the folder on the server and copy the path then paste it in so I cannot see how it could be misspelled. But I noticed that when I modify my ucf I usually have the local server like: X:\ or Z:\ etc. but when I copy the path from windows explorer it starts off with \\ then the server name.

  • the \\servername would be a UNC path rather than using a mapped drive letter to that server. Either should work.

so in your UCF the MS_RFDIR variable contains all the folders paths needed for the references ?

  • OK, to the initial configuration, I added the specific project folder, the next subfolder then the specific job folders. Now all of the refs are found. A question, why would the pcf file start only at the Projects folder and nothing after that? I mean there are at least 100 projects on the \\servername.

I'm going to leave this the way it is for now (probably just keep it) since I'm getting what I need.

Thanks to everybody that took the time to help me!
