Bing Map attach error - Outside of coordinate system?

I am trying to use attach a Bing map, but I get an error for the GCS I have attach?

"Bing Maps" gets listed in the raster Manager but in RED.

And I get the following...

The coordinates are outside the valid range of the GCS
www.bing.com/maps/aerial
EPSG:900913 --> NewBrunswickCSRS Error: Reprojection operation performed on coordinates outside of mathematical domain of coordinate system.

I know my GCS is the correct one for my region...so why doesn't work? My Bing key is defined.

  • Hi,

I guess that, if you are using the “British Ordnance Survey”, it is because you want to work on a region like“United Kingdom” island or France. As you can see on the screen capture below, it does work to attach a “Bing Maps” with Raster Manager in MicroStation CONNECT U10.

What you have to know, any projected coordinate system has a valid domain. This is a limited area where the coordinates are in a valid range of precision. Raster Manager only displays the raster portion inside this domain while the new background map displays the entire globe. The projection calculation outside the valid domain may give very bad result. For example, you cannot measure a distance outside that area.

Therefore, if you are trying to look at an area outside the domain, you will never see it while using Raster Manager. But it probably means that you are not using the right coordinate system.

  • Yves, thanks for the response, but this does not make sense.

What is the valid domain of a coordinate system? i am working on sites within London, UK. this is clearly within the coordinate system area. In the case that I am looking at now, there is no reprojection. ie the geometry is drawn coincident with the OS.

If the background displays, then surely this means I am within the domain?

Additionally, going by the update programme, I am assuming we will not see U10 until around the end of July??

  • Hi Duncan,

First, sorry if I wrote U10 but I used U9.1, as you, to create the screen capture. That said, we don’t understand why it is not displayed in your case. I have a developer looking at it and he will be back to you later.

Second, yes there is a projection in your case. The Bing Maps data is delivered using the Coordinate system EPSG:900913. We must transform the pixels coming from Bing Maps in the coordinate system assigned in the DGN. Here “British Ordnance Survey GRS80”.

A projected coordinate system is always defined to be used in a limited area of the globe. This area is highlighted in the image below. But in Raster Manager, we try to maximize this area as much as possible. Therefore, most of the time the valid domain used by Raster Manager is larger than the one described in the dialog. The calculation used in this transformation generate a loss of precision and we maximize the domain to keep a minimum of precision.
