How to create item type?

thanks

  • Hi

Can you explain a little bit more what you are trying to achieve.  Also can you let us know what version of MS you are using ie 08.11.09.459  (see help about for this

  • Hi,

as Ian wrote, it's not clear what msi8 means, such MicroStation version does not exist. I assume you mean MicroStation V8i ... but there are about 7 versions of V8i, so "V8i" only is still not precise enough specification.

Item Type is MicroStation CONNECT Edition feature and cannot be created in older MicroStation versions. There is a backward compatibility implemented in terms of accessing item type values, when they exist in DGN file already. But MicroStation V8i does not offer tools to modify existing item type structure or to create new ones. You also cannot attach item types to elements.

So if you want to work with Item Types, you have to use MicroStation CONNECT Edition.

    With regards,

  • Hi,

If you are a select user, you can learn how to create item types in MicroStation CONNECT Edition from the LEARNserver :  Item Types

For more information on new features in MicroStation CONNECT: https://communities.bentley.com/products/microstation/w/microstation__wiki/31320/list-of-what-s-new-and-changed-in-microstation-connect-edition

  • There are ITEM sets in v8i but they are not the same thing in CE , in V8i they don't  have  metadata, they are more like a display set or view group, the only way in V8i that  you can make the sort  of thing, though more limited in v8i like the Items in CE but using  V8i is to use Tags and attach those  tags to elements..the tag then can have an excel like table attached  but its single column and multi row but the same  names for row and column are assigned  per tag set... and the individual fields  or records can be prepopulated  by default or not and also by  hand  ie edit the tag for each element, you can also create reports to extract data for tagged elements  programatically as element have  properties like level name , colour, type of element , area, length,  perimeter etc and with some  vision or planning can be used to give  useful reports about  things  like  room areas, number of and type of doors or windows,  signage schedules , part lists for Bill of materials etc...

I posted here many  times a  tutorial ( not created by  me but Karen Fugle  one very smart lady) on tags and creating  reports on tags  search for tags 101 should find it.. if your not going over to CE  and cant find  the tutorial PM me and  I'll send  pdf and link to video I did for the local users meeting ages ago...

here is the link to the post you'll need to scroll down to find the 101 tags.txt link , down loads it and rename extension to pdf so you can view it... lots of other  good stuff in that post even the video link whch still works  and  stuff  on programs to import export tags so you can do Title block updates in both directions ie export for cad to excel or other and  import back into lots of title blocks new data ie revisions , dates etc...

I use this stuff all the time  for entire project plan sets and for drawing indexes or registers to keep track of revs too as well as part lists etc ...
