Data field gets duplicated when text is changed

I am not sure if it's called a data field what I'm talking about. When placing a text I can change the highlighted text to a data field (at least it says so in the German version). If I change the text contained in the data field and press OK, that field gets duplicated in the text editor, so I see both the original data field and the new one. This happens both in Powerdraft CE 5 and Microstation CE 7 on two separate machines and in completely different dgn files. Did anyone else come across this behaviour?

  • I have Connect Edition Update 7 (v10.07.00.39) and am not seeing any duplication in the English version! I Highlighted the text in the paragraph and turned it into an Enter Data Field with no problem. I Edited the Enter Data Field and tried some more modifications without a problem.

I Hope This Helps Someone Reading This!  (Intergraph>PseudoStation>MicroStation user since 1980's)

  • Thanks for testing, George. I have just tried this on another Win7 64 bit workstation with a new file created from the standard 2dseed.dgn supplied by Bentley and can still reproduce this behaviour in Powerdraft CE5. The data field is not overwritten but copied...

  • A few possibilites

Can you move both pieces of text?

Are you sure the file is not referenced to itself?

If your talking about the underscores for the data field those can be switched off via view attributes.

If you're talking about the underscores for the data field

MicroStation has been around for three decades.  Over the years similar terms have been introduced that refer to different technologies.  It's often confusing, particularly in this case where a German user is translating MicroStation terms into English.

    Text Fields

MicroStation text fields were introduced in the V8i era.  Text fields are smart text embedded in a text element.  A text field displays data harvested from a DGN file, model or element.  For example, you could have the DGN model name displayed as a text field in a drawing title block.

    Enter Data Text

An enter data field (or enter data text, what the OP calls data fields), which you are referring to, pre-dates text fields by several generations of MicroStation.  Enter data text lets you create text elements with placeholders (by default the underscore character).  Once placed, MicroStation provides a tool to let a user update enter-data field placeholders without disturbing the remaining text.

One difference between text fields and enter-data text is that the former enables automatic updates while the latter requires manual editing.

  • Yes, I'm talking about the enter data text. Thanks for the explanation.

One of our clients still uses them - I think just because they don't know any better. I'll try to convince them to just change them to normal text.
