Total Number of Sheets?

As long as I am working on the title block today, I have another question:

Is there a way to get the total number of sheets? The sheet numbering is simple in this case: 1, 2, 3, 4 etc. I don't have Civil, A4rch, Electric, etc. sheet numbering to be concerned with.

What I want is to automatically number the sheets like so: 1/4 for sheet 1 of 4 total sheets.

Every project will have a different number of sheets. I could link the last number (after the /) to the last sheet created once the last sheet is created, but that would mean I would have to edit every title block on every sheet? I don't know - I'm asking.

What I want is to create a one-sheet dgn, with fields or links that populate the sheet number: <current_sheet>/<last_sheet>. The first sheet is copied as needed until we get to the last sheet.

Is there a field or way to link to whatever the last sheet number is?

  • We use Print Organizer with pen tables and text substitutions for that in V8i.
    Of course, we only get away with that because all we submit are printed/PDF plan sets - we are not required to turn in CAD files. That means that we only tend to worry about sheet numbering when printing. (This does bite us in the butt for cross referencing sheets! fortunately, we don't do that often).

    If you reference your title blocks/sheet borders, "last sheet" can be shown as part of that, so it only needs to be edited in one place to show up everywhere.

    I'll be watching this to see what the advances have been!

    Thanks for the reply. If you look at my other post from today about automatically updating fields you may have given me a solution to that, too. It's a little more work than I want, but it might do.

    We do not currently reference in the border/title block. We have a sheet model drawing with the border elements already in it that the design is referenced into and then the sheet model is copied within the same sheet dgn as many times as needed to get the total number of sheets.

    If I use a reference file for the border/title block, my users would have to open it separately, make the edits for total sheet number, and the other fields that have to be updated. it is more work, and is essentially a "work around," but it could be made to work. I don't really want to have my users, who are field people 90% of the time - not CADr's - have to keep all this straight (I don't want them to have to think at all beyond entering in certain project info in someplace like File Properties), but it would work.

  • An alternate approach is to reference the title block with all common elements, include the /4.

  • I can definitely get behind making things as seamless and thought-less as possible. While I may love to get my hands dirty with all the CAD details, most people are not me (and there should really only be one "me" per office!). I want my users to have everything possible set up for them automatically, if I can get away with it.
