When will we get multiple user full access to one file in MicroStation?

When will a version of MicroStation be released that will allow multiple users to read/edit one file? Is this in the pipeline for a future release?

Revit can do this and, from my point of view, works a treat. This allows whole team to work in one model.

  • This discussion mentioned an example of multi-user work in one file in Revit. It was rightly noted that although this is called work in one file, it is still built on the principle of external links of local files to a single storage file. But in fact, this is not the main thing. When working in Revit, users have access rights to different parts of the project in accordance with the assigned roles. For example: user 1 works with walls, and user 2 works with windows. If the user alone tries to move or edit the window, he will see a notification about the lack of rights to edit this element. But if a work need requires user 1 to edit the window, user 1 can request temporary editing permissions from user 2. Thus, although you are not physically working on the same file, you have the ability to gain access to edit any part of the project.
If I organize the work of the team using external links in MicroStation, will it be possible to get access to edit the file that I have connected as a link?

That's exactly what ProjectBank, mentioned by Ian Lapper, was able to do that two decades ago.  As Ian notes, it met with poor reception by Bentley customers and was abandoned.

Does anyone remember Viecon.com? The online file sharing service by Bentley? It was a predessecor to online storage and collaboration. It allowed multiple users to store and share (I hope you're sitting down) 250 megabytes worth of files. Together with ProjectBank it was supposed to be the future. And then Viecon dissapeared silently.

I guesse Bentley was ahead of its time with both ProjectBank and Viecon, but its users were not.

Look what the CAD dragged in...

  • I remember it well.  I was part of the Bentley team to champion it. as you say too good too soon.  shame though if they had continued it would be a world leader....... c. 20 years later

  •  I remember it being introduced in Harderwijk, the Netherlands in 2000, together with V8. A demovideo with loud music and pyro in it shook us into the next century.
When I heard Bentley lady presenting the online storage feature, I could not help but think "How are we going to use this with only one pc that has a (dial up) modem?"
And also: "who the hell are we going to collaborate online with? We'll hand them a floppy."
Yeah, that attitude pretty much killed it. Sorry Ian.

Well "adidas networking" still is a thing even having access to 1Gbps fiber optic modem. Try share reality mesh or Point clouds and it is faster to copy it to flash or HDD and send by snail post. There still is bottleneck to get something to and from cloud.
