create links in callouts to open design file and in pdf to jump to a page

Can you add a hyperlink to a section callout that will not open a design file or model but once a pdf combined file is created the callout can be selected and jump to the page in the pdf set.

I know a client of ours is doing this with REVIT and it makes it really handy to jump back and forth through  their pdf documents.

go to a plan page select the elevation callout and bam it takes you to the page. Same for sections and details

  • Yes you can link to pdfs, I'm not sure about specific pages with  pre CE but definately pdf files can be linked to an object  even an active point can be used but it depends on which version of Mstn and which version of Adobe Acrobat reader is set to default as the  pdf association... no all versions of mstn can use all versions of  adobe reader, my V8i ss3  cannot  use anything  but adobe reader  to open pdfs on the fly.. and  if you give this to clients they have to be able to do the same path and have the same version compatability... but in house works well...

IMHO I belive bentley is always behind with the  latest  Adobe reader and will not  allow you to choose a different  reader as the association settings for pdf in windows... well that been my experience for the last 10 years...

    Anecdotal experience...

A few years ago  I created tens of  hundreds of links in several hundred dgn files to pdf reports  making the  cad files more interactive and  informative to the engineering and admin staffs at one of my  previous employers and it was wonderfully  received and acknowledged as great move forward.. at the time we had adobe reader 8 or 9 and  Mst V8iss3... after 1 year of it all working  perfectly, suddenly over night  without warning  it just stopped opening the links!

I thought it  might have been IT re-pathing drives and folders.. but it turned out that IT did a company wide  Adobe acrobat reader update to version 9 or 10 and  mstn no longer knew how to open the pdfs... after much heated dialog  with IT we ended up making  a virtual drive with virtual versions of  Bentley view and Adobe reader that were compatible with each other.. needless to say I lost a lot of good will with the  IT guys....but it worked without  changing all the links... I was even able to update the pdfs as long as the names and paths remained the same....

Apparently, there are also ways to jump to bookmarks and destinations.

what would be a great help is if Bentley could look at the potential workflows and insert some 'enabling' tools.

    1. PDF print settings in batch printer or print organiser that will automatically generate the bookmarks or destinations.

    2. Integration in Sheet Index: Right click on Sheet gives the user the option to open the pdf instead of the dgn. PDF not available in designated folder? Option to generate.

    3. Make pdfs more Bentley savvy by embedding path info when printing. Open pdf, use links in book marks tab in Acrobat to jump to sheet model or design models via drop down menu, similar to the Call Out menu works.

  • 1st off I gave up on adobe acrobat. I moved over to Bluebeam revu which is superior in mho . And there customer support is awesome!

I just found what I want in Bluebeam REVU Extreme addition. Check this out  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxLeG29vpYU

I can create links to elements to jump to another file or model and then create a pdf file and add links to the calls outs to navigate around the pdf file

  • Yes, bluebeam has the right idea. But, it looks like it does the linking after the pdfs are generated by the cad app. I think that batch tools are essential due to the repetition.

the ability to filter and do simple mods to the names is also essential.

what would be better is if the linking can be done on conversion, print to pdf. what you want to avoid is waiting around for the cad manager or the user to open up another app to do it. It will not be reliable enough.

mstn already has its project explorer and sheet index, which is aimed at providing the user with a window to navigate the federated landscape of files and models and designated folders. It should build on that.

pdfs are key documents, and snapshots of information in print format optimised for human review. For checking and assistance purposes, it is far more effective to open a PDF to view or read, especially cross disciplinary, where we do not edit the info anyway.

a lot of time, you just need to check something small like a SSL in the structural drawing... and want to avoid firing up a whole cad model.Or navigate between detail or section callouts.

also, mstn's hypermodeling is a platform in waiting for providing links between documents. also based on project explorer. there already links setup between design, drawing and sheet models when the drawings are generated. Including the new named/drawing boundary tools. These relationships should be used by the pdfs.
