I'm guessing when we give it a circular mask element, MS maximizes the vertices.

Okay, almost all of my clip masks are circular. I bet that is it. I don't know why I didn't think of it like that. Thanks.

Thank you John. Now that's a quick way to reach those 5000 clip points. I stepped away from circular clipping for that very reason many years ago.

Is it possible that clip masks weights heavier on the file then clip boundaries?

Yes, that's always been the case.

With MicroStation/J, and a smaller number of clip points, the polygon was easy to see. With thousands of clip points it's hard to tell that it's not a circle.

I noticed in the past that using circular elements to create clip boundaries and clip masks actually creates polygons... with loads of clip points. Dunno if this still is the case with V8i SSn though.

Also, if it is an older V7/J file, that limit is somewhat around 100 points. Can you imagine?

Without seeing your file it's hard to comment. The 5,000 point limit includes your clip boundary and all clip masks. It's not 5,000 per boundary and 5,000 per mask.
