Recover file

Hi I was working on my V8i version last night and the file crashed so I closed down the software and reopened it again. But seems like that part of my 3D model went missing.
Is there a way to recover it from a certain time?

I have tried to right click the file > restore previous version but the versions listed are too far back

Is there anything I can check on my C drive? Or does anyone know where I can allocate the bak files?

Unfortunately there is no way to recover the lost information.

Something you might want to consider is the use of the AutoSave function outlined in the following:

    https://communities.bentley.com/products/microstation/w/microstation__wiki/2879/using-the-autosave-features-in-microstation-v8-cs

This may have drawbacks in that some instances when using the AutoSave function some crashes might corrupt the file and the whole file may not be accessible, which is why it is also important to consider implementing backups:

  • I know in V8i, it is possible to use the command BACKUP to create backups of your active design file to a location of your choosing. You set the location to store backup files with the configuration variable MS_BACKUP. I have that assigned to a function key, so that I can quickly save off a backup whenever I want. It also would not be too hard to cobble up a VBA that would use the OnDesignFileClosed event to create a backup.

Back in V7 and earlier, there was a way to (maybe) recover corrupted files, but the EDG non-graphic editing utility went away with the V8 file format. EDG wan't always perfect, and there were no guarantees, but it saved me quite a few hours of work at the time. I wish there was a recovery utility like that today...

  • Did you try the verify repair tools in msnt  on a copy  of your file?

BTW axiom have a dgn repair tool,  it can fix files quite well, that  you could not repair or open any other way but  you can never be sure it will recover everything... the product is pretty expensive but  it depends on your data how much is it worth... you can  get a demo version but is restricted to file size in test trial mode.. how ever  you can send the file to them and maybe ask for a screen shot of the recovered file to see if its worth it to buy ... but I'm not sure if in trial mode if you can get a full report.. suggest you talk to Axiom tech and sales ...FYI they also claim to fix files before they get too bad to open next time.. ie ongoing corruption increases...
