We REALLY like to use reference files for our borders. Probably 95% of the text in our title blocks is the same from sheet to sheet across a project, with only a few items changing on a per sheet basis. With a reference file, any changes to that information takes place once, and show up correctly everywhere.
There are a few things that we'd like to have in the border reference that could "read" the properties of the active model - things like sheet name and sheet number. I'd like to know if Text Fields can accomplish that. My initial attempts are not promising, but I may well be missing a variable or setting somewhere.
Also, can I place a field that can be linked to a file other than my active file? I have hundreds of match lines, all of which need to read "See Sheet ##" where ## is the number of the corresponding sheet. This is a NIGHTMARE to keep updated by hand. Is this something that we could use Fields for? Could you please explain that procedure? If not Fields, is there any other way to "manage" all these sheet callouts?
I haven't worked on a job of this size in well over a decade, and I'm interested to learn what technological advances have taken place that might make the task simpler.Thank you.

Is there a tutorial for this sort of thing? I tried to check out Bentley Learn, but nothing jumped at me for this topic.

In the Sheet Index, select the Manage Sheet Index icon and on the File tab in the dialog box, select the icon to "Add Custom Properties".Add the custom properties that you want in the sheet title block (Example: Revision_No)After filling in the correct values for each sheet, Right mouse click on the name of the sheet set or on any sheet and select "Update Sheet Model Properties". This will push the information to the model properties of the sheet. You can now create Text Fields in your title blocks that use the Sheet Model properties. You can also make Text Fields that use the Sheet Set properties.
Sheet Index? What's that? Where do I find that? That's not some Connect thing, is it? That won't help me for a couple of years...
MaryB,
I believe what Robert DiMauro is talking about is related to MicroStation CONNECT Edition and the following Blog series might also assist when you move to using the latest version.

AH, if only I were part of the discussion for our timelines...
Unfortunately, that is decided by our largest client, followed by our CAD manager (who is not me).
It would be good to know who and what might be holding your company back from upgrading to CONNECT versions of software. This could be specific clients, 3rd party tools, companion products etc. You can message me directly if you wanted keep this private.
