I can create a linestyle in V8i with the same text in it. i.e. - - - G - - - G - - - G - - -

Instead of creating your linestyle from just Stroke-Point1, you would create your linestyle from Stroke-Point1-Stroke-Point2

I would also recommend you never put text in a custom linestyle, rather trace over the letter with a line string

Instead of tracing over the text, place the text in your file. After defining the origin point use the Drop Element tool to drop the text into normal elements. This way the text appears correct. Tracing over it can take a long time. We have some combination utility line styles such as -------E&T&CTV&FO--------- the would be very cumbersome to trace. Much quicker to place the text and drop it before creating your point component.
