area of multiple shapes

Question

In V8i you could use the group hole tool to select multiple shapes (*** Ctrl held down) and then get the combined area. This does not appear to work any longer in Connect U10. Is there another method for doing this?

 This continue to work at least on this side. Maybe you've change the Element Selection mode without knowing it? 
 The elements are really shapes? Sometimes they look like shapes but in reality they are line strings.

 Yes, use the Element Selection with this: 
 
 This way you can select your elements one by one and when you have all the desired selection find the sum of areas.

 I have just tried this. in MS CE10 and for me it works 
 
 I placed 2 identical shapes. (Area setting set to Solid) 
 
 Within one of the shapes I placed 3 circles, each circle was a Hole rather than a solid

I selected the bottom elements and created a Grouped Hole via the grouped hole tool 
 
 I then added the text Fields for the top and bottom shapes 
 
 This is what I get

it works..... 
 
 NOTE: If you use the HOLE setting... YOU MUST PUT IT BACK TO SOLID, or all shapes will be HOLES 
 
 Sadly Named Groups with Group Lock ON does not replicate this behaviour
