Connect - Home use

I have been modifying the UK dataset on ABD U3 at home and prior to that with U2 and U1. Couple of weeks ago I found that the Home Use license wasn't working properly (ie having to log in and register at each start up and then despite being told software is registered getting kicked out after 10 minutes). So I log a service request and three weeks into discussions I today receive the following from Bentley:

the issue is that CONNECT Edition is not available for Home Use. You should be able to activate AECOsim Building Designer V8i though

In the famous words of an American tennis player at Wimbledon "you cannot be serious"

As users we are currently waiting on U4 being released (was expected early August, but then users never believe Bentley on update delivery dates) so what is Bentley's idea that CONNECT Edition software is NOW not available for home use, how do they expect users and sometimes CAD managers to customise the software in their own time if the software version being used in paid work is not available and you are being restricted to a version that is not current and has completely different configuration set ups.

If you haven't already read the response from Jan Slegr of the 20 August 2018 to Mary Kay Sheahan post entitled BDN developers, MicroStation users need your applications to work with CONNECT Edition applications in the MicroStation Programming forum then please do so.

Not to mention the time and effort Ian Lapper has had to put in on the forum to request a CONNECT version of Bentley View

There seems to be a theme here - Bentley has produced CONNECT versions and is now going out of its way to stop users from being able to successfully use the software. Perhaps Bentley can tell us the users and ultimately those who pay their salary what is going on?

Or I am reading this in far too cynical a way?

  • Hi Ian,

If you haven't already read the response from Jan Slegr of the 20 August 2018 to Mary Kay Sheahan post entitled BDN developers

I am not quite sure whether I should be happy you mentioned me, because it would be nice to have no reason to have to write such comment (or my earlier one) ;-) But unfortunately the situation requires it in my opinion.

The problem is that maybe I receive few tens of confirmations "I agree with everything you wrote" privately via e-mail or chat, but only a few person react publicly.

and is now going out of its way to stop users from being able to successfully use the software

Yes, it's done in many ways: chaotic licensing (maybe the licensing based on Connection Client will be great, but I do not know about any clear explanation of Bentley strategy and plans available, so managers and CAD admins are distrustful), no tutorials, migration guides (with all respect, what is available at wiki is not enough), Bentley have not been able to even migrate their own utilities (civtools, steel etc.). And because Bentley have long term problem with community management, they are not able to negotiate and motivate users to help them in this effort.

  • Hi Jan,

What is most noticeable is that there has been alack of response from Mary Kay Sheahan to your comments at least posted on the forum.

Bentley have not been able to even migrate their own utilities (civtools, steel etc.

This is certainly something that has annoyed a lot of users over a lot of years, the one that I find really annoying is the ability to place curved multilines which has been requested time and time again. It is almost as if Bentley is saying we are not interested in the needs and wishes of the user we will produce what we think the user needs and the user can moan as much as they like we don't care

  • Hi Ian,

I have asked the ABD and MicroStation support teams to review and provide any helpful insight or resolution to your specific issue in this post.  Please allow a little time for them to review this post and identify any/best options available to help.

Also with respect to the post by Mary Kay -  Jan Slegr will be on a call with us tomorrow to discuss any issues and concerns on that thread.

    Thank you and HTH,
    Bob
