Mstn Connect Update 10 Enter Data Fields turning white

Hi,

In Microstation Connect Update 10, I am placing cells with "Enter Data Fields" in them.  When I enter information into an empty "Enter Data Field", it turns white.  When I edit an existing filled "Enter Data Field", it turns white. When I place a text with an "enter data field", it shows properly.  When I edit that text (edit single enter data field tool), the part of the text with the data field turns white.

This does not happen in Mstn V8i SS3.

Is there a setting that I am missing, or is this a bug?

  • Gotcha.  Yes I to have issues with getting my dimensions to be anything but white. everything will change to active color except the text.  I have to manually edit the color in "Text Foreground Color" in order to get the dimension to be anything but white. and again if I want to change it to white.

That however has been a minor inconvenience to all my damn data fields changing color willy nilly.

I feel your pain I have used V7, V8, V8i, CE and seems they made changes in everyone but with CE they through it all out and decided to create a new product that has little to do with what it was.

and this new thing with V7 and them flipping it and anyone that wants to keep using it the finger...  Good way to put themselves out of business if they think they are they only game in town.

  • Hi James,

There are multiple problems with white text!

    1) During some versions of CE, some text would be written as white, with an override to the correct color.  When mirrored, manipulated, etc. the text would suddenly become white.  This whiteness was written directly into the element and it would just show up after manipulation, either by CE or by V8i.

    2) Bentley keeps messing the text up to become white (or the active color) when editted.

    3) I have issues with cells with dimensions.  If the dimension is created in V8i, it works.  If the dimension in the cell is created in Mstn CE, it turns white when placed!.

The bottom line is that Bentley has forgotten that this is supposed to be a drafting tool.  Prior to cad, drafting was done by hand, and mostly in one font (the one you hand drafted).  In earlier versions of Microstation, the information about the text element was written in the text element header.  This included the origin, the justification, the format (font, size, spacing), and the element attributes (color, weight, level, linestyle, etc.).  The text portion of the element was just text.  Now, Bentley thinks that this is a word processor.  The element header is often overlooked when it comes to formatting.  The formatting is now included in the text, so you have different parts of the text different colors, sizes, fonts, etc.  Some of this enhancement is nice--you can bold, underline or italicize parts of text--which is nice.  The problem is that problem is that the super fancy text no longer works properly, especially when a manipulation tool is anticipating that it is the old style text element.  In other words, the "enhancement" breaks the basic functions of the tool & element.

  • This is in regards to enter data field  (a blank spot for the user to fill in).  It seems to be resolving on newly created "Enter Data Field".  After playing around with it a bit, in this case the text now stays whatever color the data field is.  However it appears that cells that have already been created still have this issue.  Those cells where made in V8 or earlier.

it also seems to have fixed existing "enter data fields" not in a cell. and newly created "enter data fields" placed in a cell.  But any existing "enter data field" in a cell will change to the active color when I use "Edit Enter Data Field" to change the text.

I suspect you are right that there is something else affecting what you are trying, as clearly the cells created under older versions of microstation have some attribute that makes them different then newly created "enter data fields"

Trying to put a screen shot in but not sure if its working.  I used the "Insert Enter Data Field" option in the "Text Editor" window when you right click to create these.

Quick Edit.  The element description on the ones that fixed is just "text (and the text that was entered",  The ones that it didn't fix are listed as Text Node.

  • it will automatically change to the active color.

    Hi James,

Is this relating to a "data field" (ie a field relating to an element's properties) or an "enter data field" (a blank spot for the user to fill in)?

With my case, the "enter data field" was turning white, even though my active color was not white.  There could be a different setting affecting that behavior.

I'm glad that you were able to band-aid Microstation to get it to work.

  • I am also having this issue.  What I have discovered is as follows

When editing a data field after commiting to the change it will automatically change to the active color.

My work around has been to change the active color to what I need.  Annoying but so far it has been the only solution.

As to Robert Arnolds response it would seem that they have added a configuration variable which is what i figured.  I did get this to work and it stopped the color changing so that's a plus thank you this has been driving me nuts.

While it is potentially a useful variable because if you use macros or shortcut keys or some other thing to edit data fields having the data field auto change to the active color could be useful.  However I tend to agree that having this defaulted to false is a poor (being polite) development decision as I imagine there are very few people/companies that would want this functionality.
