3d supplier model file size reduction

Is there any way to convert suppliers 3d Model into hollow model with only the outline of the equipment visible and unwanted meshes and lines should be deleted?

  • It's all about the LOI (Level of information) you actually need. You can create something like this in under 5 minutes. Do you need any more detail than this? You could add the rivets and make it more realistic but as long as you have the basic dimension correct then do you need more?

  • thanks for the reply duncan. I think the last option for me will be this if i dont succeed in managing the supplier model.

  • I completely agree with Duncans Idea of remodelling the geometry, but unfortunately there is a common trend to say: "lets use vendor models instead of doing the modeling stuff ourselves". In reality you open pandoras box with the importing procedure.

The main problem with importing STEP, SAT, IGES and whatsoever is that they are no "native" cad-formats but "export/import formats"

And when you export or import them you have to rely on the abilities of the application you are using.

The question: did the person on the other side of the line export his model completely right ?

And if he did, did you import it completely right ?

Are you sure there is nothing missing ? How on earth do you actually know what the result SHOULD look like ?

I once had the case that the same step file couldnt be imported at all to MS-V8i SS4 but worked fine in SS3.and i also had different results in Autocad 2017 and Autocad 2018 as well.

Sent the Step file to Autodesk and they were able to reproduce the error.

Its a bug in ACAD 2018 (and it wasnt fixed in any update yet)

And i only recognized the error because i imported the model in Autocad 2017 half a year before and could SEE there was something wrong.in 2018. How many errors did i NOT recognize before ?

My conclusion is NOT to trust the results in one application but to view it in at least 2 applications (and not even two viewers deliver the same results)

Actually you can only be safe if all participants in a project use the same software platform, the same software version and the same NATIVE file format. Thats why big automotive companys force their subsuppliers to use EXACTLY the same programs as themselves and to avoid ANY interfaces. But unfortunately not everybody is Mercedes Benz and can force their subs to switch from Catia to Siemens NX.

  • Hi all. Recently we have introduced a new mesh tool in MicroStation CONNECT Edition, the "Mesh Shrinkwrapper". This tool generates a mesh representation of any 3D object by shrink wrapping a mesh around it. This can be used, for example, for healing meshes or to create light-weight representations of more complex models. You could give this a try and we will appreciate your feedback.
