I just heard were going to adopt a new datum in Australia its called GDA 2020 , the old datum GDA 94 is now 17 years old and at 7 cm per year continental drift its time for a new datum.
V8i ss3 doesn't have this datum available in the library of datums... does SS4 have this? Does CE have it?
Will Bentley provide a stand alone file to be able to import it into Microstation to allow us to have the new datum when we need it? ( local government will want us using it within 1 - 2 years and all government spacial data will be in that datum).
Will the update file from Bentley work will both CE and V8i SS3 to SS4?
Does current Bentley Map have this datum? If so can somebody export the datum so we can add it to our datum (folder? ) so Mstn V8 etc can find it?
I know we should probably post this in the Mapping forum but I'm wanting to reach as many Microstation users as possible
GDA2000 geographic coordinate systems will be present in MicroStation CONNECT edition Update 12. In addition to this will be introduced new GDA94 based coordinate system that allow converting to GDA2000 systems using either the official 7-parameter transformation or the official NTv2 grid shift files.
Grid shift files will not be delivered but a text file indicating where they can be downloaded will be provided.
how will pre CE users be able to make use of this without CE? would we perhaps be able to import the files or file from inside CE , somehow I doubt it as it would be 64bit....yet another bullet in the CE gun being held to our heads....

thanks mark but that article requires one to have and use Bentley map and if it was that easy then Bentley could just provide us V8i users with the replacement file(s)... looks like I have 2 more years to learn Acad, better that than learn CE... at least everything works in latest acad and doesn't take forever to load and if you have to use ribbon then may as well go over to acad. even if my relationship with Bentley has been almost 30 years.... maybe its finally time to go over and embrace the dark side...
I'm not going to try and defend the complete hash Bentley has made of CE but the latest release U10 does at least have some performance improvements and you can use the classic dialog and toolbars to get closer to V8i. It is the first version of CE that I would consider deploying. I'm also fighting the battle as we use Revit on most of our projects post planning so we get AutoCAD as part of the subscription so why would you pay twice for Microstation? It's not an easy question to answer.
You'd only need map if you were creating a GCS. If the files are provided (which they will be, either by Bentley or fellow users) all we need to do is either update the gcs library or add another variable to point to the custom one. Not providing a workflow for GCS update for v8i products is tantamount to discontinuing all v8i support in Australia in the next couple of years, which would be lunacy...
Although CE has its issues, it is still far superior to acad IMO (and I use acad 2019 regularly).

Bentley is going to be discontinuing V8i support in a couple of years as it is, aren't they?

Just as you brought this up, support for pre CONNECT versions of MicroStation will be diminishing from mid 2019

thanks Andrew its good to know the actual time table....too bad I wont have retired before then... drat I needed an extra 3 years ... oh well by 2021 CE should be working as intended and a few extras beside....
Andrew as ss4 will continue a while yet any plans for the new datum in the gcs library to have an update for GDA2020 or will that have to wait until 2020? ...
We used the AMG66 for many years before we actually took up the GDA94 ( around 2001-2005 ) as industry std for survey in Australia so I assume we'll keep using the GDA 94 for a few years more before we adopt GDA2020 as the industry survey std datum here in Oz.
No further development of MicroStation V8i is planned and as Alain mentioned the...

but this would require Bentley Map, as you have also noted, to add a custom GCS.
Thanks Andrew but will copying the gcs library from CE to replace the V8i cgs library work? I some how doubt the compatabliity one being 64 bit and the other being 32 bit.
GDA2020 Geographic Coordinate System files for v8i converted from CE U11 and discussed here:
