Can a MicroStation Element Template cell be Annotation Scale Sensitive?

MicroStation V8i SS4, 08.11.09.829

I have point data in a shapefile, and when I say shapefile I mean a set of four files, shp, shx, prj, & dbf. I reference file attach my shapefile to my survey basemap dgn file.  I have a gcs assigned to my basemap file, and I use the “reprojected” setting when attaching the shapefile so that everything is aligned correctly.

I have created a MicroStation Element Template cell, from a cell in my standard cell library and defined the Element Template cell scale to be 1,1,1.

I apply my Element Template cell to my shapefile from the pulldown on the References dialog box.

And the Element Template cell is applied over my data points in my basemap file at 1:1 scale.

So my question is; Can that Element Template cell be defined to be annotation scale sensitive?

I need to reference attach my basemap file to my sheet files, and my sheet files are of various scales, 20:1, 40:1, etc.

If I select theElement Template cell in my dgn file and do an element information on it the “Is Annotation” setting is set to False and is grayed out.

I have tried toggling the reference file attachment setting “Use Active Annotation Scale” on and off with no effect.

My cell in my cell library is defined to be annotation scale sensitive.

I have tried the key-in “Annotation Scale add” and that had no effect.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Brian L.

  • Not sure  you should use template.. you have a cell in the cell library you wish to attach so it  should  work being annotation scale allowable...

The shape file is read only when refed into mstn file...

When you have the shp file attached can you see objects... ( the ones you want  replace with your cell) ... if so why not export them with the xyz tool then edit the csv to have your cell name  and use the import xyz tool with the Cxyz instead of Txyz option and it will place your active  ( named cell) by the coords defined by what was the old shp file objects....

  • In short, so long as your cell has been created with annotation cell on in the cell library then when you place the cell via your element template then the cell will honour the annotation cell of the active file.

I have many libraries set like this. Additionally, if you link the template to a custom tool, you can set annotation scale lock on or off there also.

  • PS, I just noticed in your element template you have the cell scale set to 1,1,1. This locks the cell scale.

Remove this option then the annotation scale will be active.

  • Hi Lorys, I appreciate your response. Yes, I can see objects, simple points, when I attach the shp file.  The current work flow is to copy the dbf file, open it in Excel, clean-up the data, save that as a csv file and use that as an input file to import the point into the project gpk file in Geopak, then visualize the points in a dgn file.

It is similar to what you propose and I am looking for a better way.

    Thanks,

    Brian L.

  • Hi Duncan,  I appreciate your response.  I am not trying to "Place Active cell".  I have no need for a custom tool.

I am applying an element template to a shp file.  I made your suggested change, removed the cell scale setting from my element template cell; this had no effect.  The element template cell still appears at 1:1 scale.

    Thank you,

    Brian L.
