Reference File Logical Names

Can anyone list the rules and best practices for reference file LOGICAL NAMES in MicroStation?  Are there characters that are not allowed or that SHOULD be avoided?  Spaces seem to be allowed, but can they cause problems elsewhere?  How many characters are allowed?  Any other gotchas to be aware of?

I have standardized "BDR" for border attachments; however, everything else is a wild west show for our users.

We are running MicroStation V8i 08.11.09.459 and planning to move to MicroStation CE 10.10.00.23.

  • About what characters are allowed:

    1. No two references can have the same logical name
    2. Blank is a valid string. So one reference can have logical name = blank
    3. Space is a valid string and is considered different from blank. So you can have one reference with logical name = blank and another reference with logical name = space.
    4. No restriction on what character you type
    5. Maximum size is 1024 characters

    About best practices and conventions:

You are free to choose any name. As users here have already suggested, a short 2-character or 3-character prefix helps with sorting large number of references.
