Advice on Largest Federated Models

Dear Forum,

Any advice on the largest Models/Federated Models that various Microstation Versions can handle?

i use both v8i and Connect and wondered if there were any advisories on sizes? Does it depends on Ram as v8i users i assume will mostly have more ram than the software can use anyhow.

Thoughts?

  • Does it depends on Ram as v8i users i assume will mostly have more ram than the software can use anyhow.

That depends on the operating system and the amount of physical memory installed per computer.

MicroStation CONNECT is a 64-bit application and requires a 64-bit operating system.  That provides a storage benefit compared to earlier 32-bit versions of MicroStation, which were limited to 2GB per application by Windows.

Windows 64-bit can work theoretically with huge amounts of memory, more than you're likely to be able to install on a PC in 2018..2020.  Depending on your computer hardware, you might be able to install up to 512GB on Windows 10 Pro.  As semiconductor technology advances, that maximum will increase.

  • Apologies should have made clear, the v8i is being used on Windows 7 32bit... so what does anyone think is the maximum that's going to open? I get a lot of crashes opening large datasets.

  • via network or locally?

    including imagery?

what about using nested refs with single models  instead of multimodel...

I corrupted a model inside a multimodel file and the whole file was so corrupt mstn didnt recognise it as a dgn  and lost all my whole days work .. no we dont have access to restore previous version ( I did in the last company I worked for but not this one) must be an IT access thingy.  So it was faster to redo a days work from and old superseded version  before IT could get back to me with last nights version restored and deliverables had to go out same day this was the master ref file for all my  plan sets  ... so not a big fan of all my eggs in one basket anymore....

  • in  this instance:

On ProjectWise, no imagery, and its utilising Nested refs from Container models. Just wondered on advice as it seems anything which totals over 1GB if data starts to struggle...
