I've received a DWG file from my client with geometry that seems to be flatten from 3D, it's 2D file but there are many overlapping duplicate elements. when I say many I mean > 600K of elements. I converted it to DGN and tried to use data cleanup tool, the analysis went pretty fast but the selection of duplicate elements is unbelievably slow. what more, when I switched to other application and MS was in background, the process seems to get frozen. however it maybe still is running, but after 30 minutes I had to kill the process.
same file in V8 SS4 took about 2 minute to completely select about 428000 elements, btw same behaviour when app is in background as MS CE, but process in background runs much faster. the only problem is that while the MS is in the background, covered by other window, the element counter stops and user has no indication if the task is running or not. especially in MS CE when the element selection runs so slow this is big problem.
any ideas how to speed up the element selection process? the file is quite big and contains private data so I cannot share it
thanks
I haven't got CE U10 but have you tried the compress design first before using data clean up to find duplicates... might speed things up.
In V8iSS4 I set my data clean up to delete duplicates not interested in finding and seeing but overlaps I don't auto delete, so I run these a separate events...

Hi Peter,
do you have Explorer dialog opened? It's the only thing I guess that can slow down the selection process, because it's synchronized with Selection set.

no, I do not use the Explorer tool in MS. the geometry is quite simple - lines and arcs, nothing extraordinary. what makes me wonder is the speed difference in V8i and CE. so, for now, I have to keep both versions as workaround :)

no Explorer, no Properties dialogs opened? Maybe my question confused you a bit, because Properties dialog represents far bigger impact to MicroStation performance, Explorer dialog is not so important (but there is some performance penalty also).

It sounds too long to me. I found some 2D map with about 1 mil. of elements and rough numbers are:
... but still not 2 minutes. Maybe Element information dialog is opened or some application slows down the process at background?
In MicroStation CONNECT Edition Update 10:
... but
It confirms a fact discussed several times already: When there is a workflow when a bunch of elements are selected, both Explorer (a bit) and Properties dialogs will slow down (or halt completely) MicroStation performance.
Hi Jan,
thanks for the thoughtful research, unfortunately I don't have time for similar analysis on my side, but will definitely give it a try later. meanwhile collecting another CE bugs :)
