Connect Advisor session loading with every Microstation?

Hi,

How do I stop this [description omitted] thing?

First I noticed a slow down while trying open a file in Microstation V8i (SS3).  I went into my Windows 7 task manager and saw the Bentley Connection Advisor running.  I also had a copy of Microstation Connect running, so I assumed that the Advisor started with Microstation Connect.  I started playing around.  A new session of Connect Advisor gets loaded every time I open a new session of Microstation--either Microstation V8i or Microstation Connect.   I have already removed the Advisor's dgnlib in V8i, and I have the Advisor's "Launch Connect Advisor on Startup" turned off.

(This is a couple sessions of Mstn V8i and a couple sessions of Connect.)

So I have to say that this is [description omitted].
1) The preference to launch Advisor is turned off
2) I never authorized Advisor to be installed into V8i
3) I noticed a slow down.
4) I don't use Advisor, especially in V8i.  In Connect I have opened it a couple times to see if there is anything worth looking at.
5) Unless Advisor is open, it should not be taking computer resources
6) There should only be one session of Advisor going--ever!

What is going on with this?  How do I stop it?  How do I prevent it from coming back in future updates?

Also, quite contrary to Bentley forcing this onto its users, where is the start menu item for Advisor?  If this is a separate application from Microstation, then why can't I just start Advisor to look around at things?  If it is part of Microstation, then why does it need to be a background process/service, and why does it get installed in other versions of Microstation?

Bentley want us to explore their new software and tools.  I don't want to have to uninstall the Advisor, because I want to see if there is something of value.  At the same time, there is no reason for it to be taking up computer resources for my causal once in who-knows-how-long curiosity.

(P.S. Microstation 08.11.09.459 & 10.11.00.36, and Advisor 10.1.0.110)

  • P.S., I just discovered that Bentley View V8i also brings up another session of Advisor.  What's very interesting--I don't even see a button to open the Advisor in View!
Edit:  On my laptop (View SS4 instead of SS3), there was a button for the Advisor.  I don't know if something I did removed the button from my desktop computer.  But, I also really have to ask, "How much 'Advising' do you need in a READ ONLY viewer?"

  • Hi,

Thanks for sharing your concern regarding CONNECT Advisor

we apologize for any inconvenience that s caused to you, I would like to work with you to resolve you issues

#1- CONNECT Advisor (CA) Service is a tool that is launched in the background with all Bentley Applications that support CA.

#2 - CA is a generic tool and is supposed to works with all Bentley Applications hence it is a separate process to maintain a standard

#3 - CA is not a resource hungry program and only comes into action, if it is displayed

#4 - We are working on a next version of CA, that would have only one service running

#5 - You can turn off the "Launch Connect Advisor on Startup" and that should keep the resources to the minimum

    Hope this helps,

  • Hi Nazeer,

"Launch Connect Advisor on Startup" is already turned off!

  • Robert,

Once CA is installed, the service will be running in the background, whenever your Bentley Product is launched..

Do you see CONNECT Advisor UI launched when you launch your Bentley Product?

Turning off the "Launch Connect Advisor on Startup", does not show CA dialog as soon as the product is launched,

  • Hi Nazeer,

The User Interface is not coming up upon launch.  My question is, "Why do I want another background process going that does nothing for me?"  Most, if not all, the time, I am supposed to be WORKING (ie productively drawing) in Microstation.  Any time that I am using the Connect Advisor, I am not productively drawing.  I don't mind if the Connect Advisor opens something when I tell it to (by hitting the icon in Microstation or the start menu), but there is no reason to have another process open and running that is providing little to no benefit to me.

You noted that "CA is not a resource hungry program".  That statement depends on how you look at it.  If you look at the cost to benefit ratio, then it is a very resource hungry program.  Cost = "little", Benefit = zero, Cost/Benefit Ratio = little/zero = infinite.

Currently, given the choice of always running another background process, or not having the Advisor available, I would probably choose to uninstall the Advisor.  Again, that is not my first choice, because if it is a potentially useful tool, then I will not be able to use or discover its usefulness.  But currently it looks like it may be a program that I will have to uninstall.

    --Thanks,

  • I agree with Robert, I had 8 Instances of Bently Connect Advisor opened. This is unacceptable.
