Are there multiple sources for Favorite Symbols?

I am using OpenRoads Designer CONNECT Edition Version 10.06 (2018 Release 4).  This may have an ORD answer, but it is a MicroStation feature so I have posted here.  When opening Favorite Symbols, I see two sections.  The upper section contains two symbols: plus/minus and degree.  Then after a spacer bar are several other symbols which are defined in the file specified in MS_DGNTEXTEDITORFAVORITESYMBOLS.  See image below.

Where are the two symbols in the upper portion of the dialog coming from?  Is there another area within MicroStation or ORD that would define favorite symbols?  I could not find any other XML files with these definitions.  I would like to merge the two lists, then allow the configuration variable location be used for individual user favorite symbols, as it seems to be set up out of the box.

  • The font selected in the Text Editor ( 'Verdana' ttf in your case ) determines these symbols.

  • That's not quite what I was asking, but I may be getting there.  RelaxedAre you saying that the two characters shown above the line are always in the list (hard-coded) in MicroStation?  My question was how to add other characters (like a Σ) so that it appears with Plus/Minus and Degree above the line?   (I'm coming from the administrative perspective of wanting a standard list of characters in the list, but allow the user full ability to add their own favorites.)

  • Not all fonts will use all the special symbols you want to use as favourites , so thy are font dependant

  • I am not primarily concerned about the fonts.  I understand that the user defined symbols have a font as part of their definition.  This must be fairly new since my V8i favorite symbols XML file did not show fonts.  This is helpful for my centerline symbol, which is only available in a few fonts.  I newly understand that the symbols in the upper list come in at the active font.

My questions relate to the upper list.  How does MicroStation know what symbols to show in the upper list?  Can other symbols be placed there alongside the Plus/Minus and Degree symbols?  Where in the configuration are they stored?  Can a font be assigned to an individual symbol in that list?

  • Both the "plus/minus" and the "Degree" symbol come as the two Default symbols in the upper part. When you are selecting a another symbol and rightclick you can "add to favourites". These added symbols appear in the lower section. I do not see how it would be possible to add Symbols in the upper section. Not directly in the user interface.

In V8i the functionality was  similar but those two Default Symbols there are in the lower section and there is a button to manage the Symbols instead of the Right-click functions in connect.

Seems that the programmers tried to keep this working somewhat similar - or the Underlying Editor functionality might have changed the behaviour a bit … the whole text Editor has changed for with connect (? There may be an api for the editor. I seem to remember it beeing a microsoft tech bit)
