Mstn CE U12 Dialog Speed Regression?

Hi,

The File dialog speed problems seems to be back. 20s+ for it to show up. Even on the second and third try.

  • It's been a month since our workplace upgraded from v8i to CONNECT edition 10 version 10.10.00.23

We are having a same issue with how slow the file dialogue is. Also, its very slow when you want to open any design file by pressing ctrl+o or simply opening or closing desing files.

Because of this issue, I was thinking to recommend our organisation to upgrade to CE U12, but its very concerning to see that this issue still persists in the latest update.

I have spent countless hours to find out why it was causing these issues and I can confirm that its to do with your .upf file.

My .upf file started with approx. 21KB and in a week its sitting on 243KB. Now when I try to just open design files by ctrl+o it is slow to open the dialog box. And to confirm it, I deleted my .upf file after that and restarted microstation again. It created a new .upf file and everything seemed to be very fast.

i'd recommend you to backup your current .upf fie and try to delete it and see if the file dialogue opens up faster. and also test it to see if ctrl+o is faster.

Does anyone know why the .upf file keeps increasing on size? and what is it saving?

    Thanks.

  • Shyam and Dominic,

FWIW. I would suggest "closing MicroStation and renaming your .upf" vs deleting the upf as part of troubleshooting these types of issues. Upf files do grow in size when opening and closing individual application dialog boxes storing their last opened positions and likewise read when opening.  It would be good to provide a before and after (good/bad patient upf) so support/development can investigate what resource(s) have changed or were negatively impacted (if not on a network).

It is also very important (for each user) to know and state if their upf file is located on the network. This should not be advised due to significant performance and potential reliability issues; and as the name was intended; to imply and by design; specific to one (local) user's preferences.

Open Windows Explorer and select the Current User Preference File
    $ % explorer /e, /select, $(MS_USERPREF)

  • Hi Robert,

    Thank you for your response.

Just some more info regarding our current workplace setup.

    • upf file is not located on the network. it is in C:\...AppData\Local\Bentley\MicroStation\10.0.0\prefs folder
    • Our dgn files are all located on the network

In V8i we had cell library and reference files (which we use it as a border for every drawing) both located on the network also. But since we moved to Connect Edition version 10, it was extremely slow to place any cell by key-in, extremely slow to just open any files or to attach any reference file. So as a workaround, we had to place all cell library and reference files in individual users PC's so atleast it's fast enough to place any cells or attach reference file etc. Although its faster than having it on the server, it's not ideal in our workplace to have cell library in individual PC's because incase of any changes to cells, we lose the consistency across all users. But for now, I can live with this. I'll comeback to this issue later on.

For now, my main priority is to just have our user's open MicroStation connect fast enough like in v8i. At the moment, we are struggling to just open up any dgn file. And once its open, ctrl+o is slow and its very frustrating.

I have attached 2 upf files here for your investigation.

Personal slow.upf is the one with 272KB and ctrl+o and file tab is very slow.

Persona.upf is brand new upf file with just 3 files open so far and ctrl+o, file tab is fast.

Please see if you can find any difference or if I can do any changes from my end.

If you require more info, please do not hesitate to contact me.

cheers and thank you for your help,

    Regards,

    Shyam

  • I also stumbled upon this which kind of made file tab response faster.

I went to File tab >Open>

    • Here I saw list of 'Recent Files'
    • I removed one by one from the 'Recent Files'

and then the File Tab on clicking became more responsive.

These list of 'Recent files' information is saved in .upf file and this is the reason why I think when deleting my .upf file was making file tab response faster along with ctrl+O.

Can anyone from Bentley please test this and see if you can find a solution? or does anyone know of any configuration or settings to NOT SAVE recent files data in .upf ? Thanks.

  • I've noticed that there seems to be a check if the file is available and generation of a preview - why not simplify the recent list to resolve this issue once and for all?

It shouldn't matter if you are on a network, ProjectWise or local.

    Regards,

    Mark

  • There is a configuration variable MS_FILEHISTORY. Set it to zero to disable the Recent Files list. Hopefully just a workaround for now.

    MS_FILEHISTORY=0

  • Thanks Kevin.

I just tested with MS_FILEHISTORY=0. Yes, it no longer saves list of 'Recent Files' history.

And as a result, File tab is fast. CTRL+O is fast also. But only thing now is because of this setting I guess, it doesn't open the folder where the opened design file belongs. I guess I can work with that for now, but Bentley seriously needs to investigate why it's happening (I.E. having recent file history makes file tab and ctrl+o slow) and release a fix.
