Why is Bentley discontinuing support for select series

Why is Bentley discontinuing support for select series? Are you trying to force us to use The Connect addition?

I'm not thrilled with the interface with Connect. And from what I have been reading I am not alone.

I HATE HATE HATE THE RIBBON, I hate all ribbons but I think this one is the worse.  There are too many clicks to get to the task you want to go to.

Back in the old days, Bentley was proud that they required fewer mouse clicks \ keystrokes to perform a task compared to Autocad. That workflow went out the window. Using JUST the ribbon just count how many clicks you have to make. LESS IS MORE!

  • I think we get carried away about the Bugs of CE.

This thread is about Bentleys Policy to force users away from select series to connect licensing.

Up till now we have been using a local Select Server.

CE from Update 11 on doesnt work with select series any more. Only with Connect Licensing

So my Company refuses to install it and they are right.

    To absolutely blunt:

In my opinion the Connection Client is a trojan horse !!

Not quite, it's about stopping V8i support. The licensing mechanism change is just a consequence of the (forced) migration from V8i to CE.

But I agree to discuss CE bugs and product quality here is a hijacking the discussion ;-)

  • SWINGING THE HATCHET MODE ON...

Thank god our customers do NOT force us to use Bentley Products

    SWINGING THE HATCHET MODE OFF

  • Hi,

The difference is this:  In previous versions, when support stopped, everything kept on going.  All the computers in our office still have Microstation 7/J installed and operational.  (If my boss's computer still worked, we'd probably still have a MacIntosh Microstation too!)  Microstation 7 is not supported, but I can still use it to access our Microstation 7 projects which used an internal feature that was not carried through to Mstn 8.  All our computers have Microstation V8i (SS3) installed.  (SS4 had bugs that messed up the printing of our projects and very quickly got removed and replaced with SS3.)  In addition to those, all our computers have Microstation Connect Upate 12 installed.  So all our users have the choice of which version to use.  (FYI, no one uses Connect unless they absolutely have to!)

The point is that we should be able to continue to use the products that we have installed on our machines, regardless of if there is "support" for them.  Previous updates did not disable our out-of-support products.  Now when they shut off the SelectServers, our previous versions may not have access to their licenses, rendering them useless for production.

On a side note, we do have the license adapter installed for Microstation V8i (SS3), so right now we are going through the Connection License Server with SS3.  Of course, I'm also wondering how long it will be before that breaks...

As have paid/bought the programs shouldn't we have access to the old programs even when not supported?

  • If V8i licence servers are to be turned off, I would imagine Bentley will have to provide users with some method that will allow perpetually licensed software to change from online licence authentication/logging/monitoring to an offline solution. It would probably be similar to node-locked however that wouldn't work because a single-license can be used on multiple machines (just not at the same time).

Far simpler to switch V8i to licensing to the CONNECT client I would imagine.
