&lt;p&gt;Is this the typical DS thread...? Yes, I do tend to try to inject some humour when possible, and often it will be at the expense of others. I will make an effort to avoid this in future.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Viewpoints: well, I am not sure I can do very much there. Online forums are notorious for &amp;#39;radicalising&amp;#39; the way views or messages are exchanged. You are right in thinking that the views are very much specific to me; and... Yes, I do not have much recent experience with Revit.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;What I do have is 30 years continuous experience of the design and delivery process (including contract administration); and have been actively looking for the best digital tools to support this for the last 10+ years. So, yes... I do feel quite strongly about certain things. I deal with the fall out every day.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;But is this merely bias? Hopefully not. I am by nature very self-critical, and have always tried to make sure I can back up what I say (Yes, maybe too reliant on other authors&amp;#39; written statements or YouTube). But equally, if you do a search of my posts on the Bentley forums, you will find that the &amp;#39;typical&amp;#39; DS post is much more critical of Bentley than anything else.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Your confusion stems from your ignorance of not understanding what the video is actually showing, not reading my posts correctly, not actually researching how the tools (which I previously mentioned) operate nor finding out for yourself the difference between profile families and detail item/component families. If you had actually done that you wouldn&amp;#39;t be asking the above and the answer would be quite simple. Seeing as you already mentioned that your company has Revit licenses, why not actually take the time yourself and follow some tutorials and actually find out for yourself? Maybe then you will get a lightbulb moment and actually get what I&amp;#39;ve been saying.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;With this statement you are actually wrong as there is a clear difference between Revit and OPB/ABD in terms of workflows and approach to tasks. The latter allows a greater degree of freedom in the ways a user works whereas Revit works in specific ways and new users learn that you have to adapt to how its designed to achieve certain tasks.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I&amp;#39;m not defending anything I just accept each program for what it is and don&amp;#39;t complain over operational differences. Unlike you I haven&amp;#39;t got an allegiance to any BIM software but I can offer viewpoints on the packages that I have used. I&amp;#39;ve yet to give ArchiCAD a try but if I find it to be better than Revit I would have no problem using that.&lt;/p&gt;

A&amp;nbsp;lot of former Microstation houses (certainly in London) are&amp;nbsp; moving to Revit and confining Microstation to sketching and presentation drawings. Stage 3 onwards in Revit. Most probably tried AECOSim but gave up as it is complex to set up and maintain. &lt;p&gt;The only market share info that I am aware of is the NBS BIM survey. Aecosim / Mstn&amp;#39;s share is at Windows Phone / Nokia levels.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Technicians tend to be on contract via recruitment firms, who shunt them around multiple projects and are starting to provide training for them as well. They seem to have pretty good employment stability given that the infrastructure sector is pretty stable with long horizons compared the more volatile commercial sector. And all of them can&amp;#39;t stop talking about their flash cars, you know the type :-)&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Even if you want to stay on staff and the firm is keen to stay on Aecosim, then think of it as an oppurtunity to learn an app that is pretty niche that may open other doors later. Market size is more of a worry for new grads who have no contacts. You don&amp;#39;t appear to be in that category. The key consideration is understanding what the firm&amp;#39;s future intentions are wrt Aecosim. As mentioned, there are more important things than what BIM tool they use.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I assume that you will not be responsible for the initial set up and training. There will be a steep learning curve and you will probably need to turn to a channel partner if you are a small / mid-sized firm. This will be expensive and of varying quality. OTOH, most R*vit firms I know also have to do this as well even if R*vit set up is acknowleded to be more straight forward... at least initially.&lt;/p&gt;

If there are 200 jobs at &amp;pound;30/hr and only 5 at &amp;pound;35/hr you&amp;#39;re fighting for a very small number of roles for a small increase in salary.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;What you said about infrastructure architects and engineers using it makes more sense. The funny thing is I&amp;#39;ve been watching plenty of the Bentley videos and it appears (at least from the outside) to be really good and intuitive to use.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;

They currently solely use MS at the minute so coord from Stage 3 onwards would be pretty straighforward as most contactors/subbies use AutoCAD and as I read it dwg import into MS is good. &lt;p&gt;Not very common. I would say that most users are transport sector architects/engineers, because it is mandated by clients like NetworkRail and London Underground.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Revit&lt;/strong&gt;: is a closed format. I would say that it is possible but there&amp;nbsp;are additional overheads. Depends on what you want to do. Are you an architect or technician or structural or MEP? In the&amp;nbsp;rail sector, there tends to be less need to interact with Revit, although there are moves in this direction. If you an architect you should not be making a choice based on what BIM the office uses. If you are a technician then it really what pays the higher rate (Currently in London, Aecosim drivers make &amp;pound;35+/hr, much higher than Revit drivers... must be the aggravation factor :-). Most technicians I know will know multiple packages (or say they do and fill in the blanks on the job).&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;AutoCAD&lt;/strong&gt;: probably one of the best&amp;nbsp;for handling dwg... outside of ACAD itself. On all our jobs we mostly get dwg&amp;#39;s from the subbies. Some IFC&amp;#39;s but only for 3d. All 2d info is dwg if you are lucky to get them to give you any cad info. As mentioned above, getting dwg info into Revit is not really something you want to do. Navis is the usual fallback. I think that you can overlay 2d dwg&amp;#39;s in Navis but haven&amp;#39;t seen it done. So it&amp;#39;s back to pdf and checking dims on paper copies, most times.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;As mentioned elsewhere, Mstn (and its verticals) may have its problems but it is still the only app/platform on the market which allows you design, coordinate and document any kind/scale&amp;nbsp;of AEC project. &lt;p&gt;Fully understood that Revit is THE big ticket but the practice that&amp;#39;s offered me a great role uses MS/AECOsim. It could be that I stayed there for a decade or more and then it matters not (unless coord with contractors is a nightmare) but on the off chance it doesn&amp;#39;t I don&amp;#39;t want to be stuck with recent experience with a package with isn&amp;#39;t really used by anyone else. Or maybe it is, and I just don&amp;#39;t know anyone who uses it.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I&amp;#39;ve looked at the NBS BIM survey for 2017 and 2019 and there&amp;#39;s obviously a gulf in the number of users between Autodesk and Bentley but I get the impression those surveys are conducted on the larger end of the architectural practice scale and I actually prefer working for smaller ones.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Mstn&amp;#39;s Hypermodeling provides some of the best tools to integrate the 2d ACS plane working within the 3d model... providing a greater than the sum of the parts synergy. No need to convince yourself one way is better than the other.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;R*vit like any app will have its blindspots and struggle with some things. And accepting or not R*vit workflows is not the aim here. Coming from a Mstn (or more CAD background) Bentley users benefit from having Ref-attachment tools that allow them to integrate 2d detailing information in 3d models, in a way that is very &amp;#39;free-and-easy&amp;#39; as mentioned above. R*vit on the other hand is not set up that way. That is not to say that it will stay that way forever. I sense that you are defending this lack unnecessarily.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I&amp;#39;ve worked on projects in Mstn where a 3D view was used in combination with orthogonal views of multiple ACS &amp;amp; clip volumes (positioning 3D models of OLE structure brackets in contexts against a point clouds of viaducts and cuttings). Was the 3D view beneficial? Not really, it played no part in the alignment process. All it provided is a contextual view of the geometry and the point cloud made pretty by Descartes, all after the critical positioning exercise was completed in ortho views.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;For the record, are you actually aware of the fundamental difference between a 3D view in Mstn and Revit? Are you also aware of the rules of annotations within Revit views?&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;That&amp;#39;s not what I was referring to, what I meant was I couldn&amp;#39;t recall if a profile family with inner voids could create a modelled extrusion. I&amp;#39;ve just tested it and it can but I&amp;#39;m not sure I would ever go to those extents. What that Youtube video shows I would also likely NOT do either. Reason being, if I had a building section, all those detail components would be visible making a large dark mess. I would prefer to add the components in the (likely only 1) detail view where it should be seen at the appropriate scale.&lt;/p&gt;

I didn&amp;#39;t get around to testing 2019 and I believe 2020 is now out so I expect yet even further improvements have been made since. From my experience I never found any slowdown and my last project was modelled with a more granular approach that a would typically be done, still worked absolutely fine though. I don&amp;#39;t know where you get the 1 model theory from, standard approach on any project involves at least 2 RVT files not 1 (and that&amp;#39;s just for the Architectural discipline)&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Standard details that I am aware companies often insert from project to project where applicable are typically partition/door details etc... There is no need for coordination for such details because they would have been created and reviewed internally until deemed acceptable to office standards and therefore ready for insertion into different projects. Do you disagree with that or do you coordinate all your metal stud partition details with 12.5mm Gyproc wallboard on both sides against all your modelled walls of such construction &amp;#39;just in case&amp;#39;? Do you sleep better at night having done so?&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Well that&amp;#39;s your viewpoint but it is not one based on experience which is conveyed by your questions and assumptions. I could be forgiven for thinking formed its from heresay, opinions of others and cherry-picking forum threads for years gone by but I&amp;#39;m not one that jumps to conclusions. I also know users who would also challenge that assumption and they are likely more experienced that the guy in the AUGI thread. I&amp;#39;m not sure what future change in direction Revit will take but for the moment its not something I have to worry about.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;li&gt;Text with built-in leaders: Mstn&amp;#39;s Place Note tool is disgustingly bad in comparison.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Align Tool: One of my favourite tool&amp;#39;s in Revit, Mstn&amp;#39;s align tool is absolutely terrible&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;
&lt;p&gt;There is also the inverse, some tasks in Revit are an absolute PITA to perform:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;ul&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Creating site plans: Dedicated site tools are trash and instead its recommended that you use the roof tool to create the different 3D zones of hard/soft landscaping&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Stairs: Don&amp;#39;t work as you would think i.e. they can&amp;#39;t create certain types of stair (3-tread winders) automatically so you have to draw the tread locations manually, cant make up complex balustrades in 1 piece so you have to layers different railings with different components to achieve the overall look.&lt;/li&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I&amp;#39;m guessing you didn&amp;#39;t actually mean to say drafting view (nothing wrong with that, I get confused with OBD/ABD&amp;#39;s terminology that is common with Revit but means an entirely different thing). As for the latter part of the statement, yes you could bring in a 2D detail from an outside party and review it in context though I&amp;#39;ve personally not had to do that once. Typically I would have been dealing with other models as mentioned previously which would be reviewed in 2D &amp;amp; 3D.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;It has nothing to do with your own perceived view of what is best practice, its down to the simple fact that you cannot take a sheet view and overlay it in a model view,&amp;nbsp; the function doesn&amp;#39;t exist in the software. If the detail is live from the model, you wouldn&amp;#39;t need to do any overlaying as its already in place. If the detail is a drafting view then you make a detail group and can therefore overlay that against a temporary model detail/section. I did already explain that in my previous post.&lt;/p&gt;

Being the architectural lead I always insisted that the Structural Engineer coordinates their model with my own using shared positioning. Sometime they weren&amp;#39;t comfortable doing it and were happy for me to set it up for them. The result being any new model I get just links into the correct location every time. If the contractor is using something non-Revit e.g. Metsec uses Tekla Structures, I worked with their Engineers &amp;amp; Technicians who can export an IFC file and it can then be quickly aligned using the project grid. A simple task that takes 1 minute to complete. Same thing with Topo surveys, just link it into the model the same as a Reference File.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;It also works perfectly fine for larger or more complex models just fine as well. It sounds like you are misunderstanding the usage of the what is being said and the complexity (or lack thereof) of the geometry. A rule users should abide by is that you NEVER bloat your model with unnecessary geometry e.g. window head/jamb sill profiles using a DWG from a manufacturer. Instead you model the basic outline to be seen in 3D/Building Sections/Elevations/Plans etc... When it comes to detail, you&amp;nbsp; insert a complex representation of the object as a detail component and hide the simple modelled object if necessary. There is a world of difference between those type of visually complex extrusions that those simple profiles are used to create modelled geometry which is what I and the AUGI poster have been explaining. The geometry created by this process is light-weight.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Again you are misunderstanding what is being said and it has nothing to do with any lack of ref attachment tools nor any copy and paste operation. If an object is modelled using a profile family (using either the sweep/gutter/fascia tools) and a change is required, the user simply edits the profile family and the modelled extrusion automatically updates and so does what you see in the detail and all the other views. Nothing difficult about that at all.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;

This sounds like trying to take a lack of functionality in R*vit (which will probably be corrected sometime) and hiding it being what is a narrow curated view of &amp;#39;best practice&amp;#39;. Of course, in reality we do this all the time. We get details (often in dwg&amp;#39;s) from the manufacturers, other consultants an need to overlay to check or copy stuff through all the time. No waiting around for someone in MOI to clean things up first. And when using the Ref attachment functionality, you have a much better less error prone link to the referenced info. Standard Mstn /ACAD stuff.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I&amp;#39;m afraid you were given bum information there. If you have a standalone detail drawn in a Drafting View, simply create a Detail Group from the annotations and insert that into a plan or section view. This allows you to perform a 2D/3D coordination review. Yes its not done in a 3D view but I&amp;#39;ve never found that a disadvantage at all. I do use the 3D view when I am visually reviewing models from other parties. e.g. structural engineer&amp;#39;s models, steelwork contractors IFC model, Metsec framing IFC model etc...&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Um, not sure he is going on about because what he is talking about isnt achievable afaik. Sweep profiles are very simple in that they contain no internal voids so its only an exterior profile boundary that is used. The geometry produced is not even comparable to what Mstn&amp;#39;s &amp;#39;Solid by Extrusion Along Path&amp;#39; command can produce. Acceptable use of sweeps are things like string courses. Profile families are also used modelling Parapet flashings etc... but not with the sweep tool. Complex extrusions are displayed using Detail Components embellished onto a detail e.g. Curtain Wall Mullion etc...&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Not so. As I say, the profiles used are just the external boundary. The benefit if using them to create modelled geometry is that they are visible in all views. If I don&amp;#39;t model that parapet cope flashing then I&amp;#39;m not going to see it in my elevations and I sure as hell am not gonna draw that with filled shapes or lines in the elevation view so there is definitely a realistic useage for these.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;In Revit, we have 3d Model views, Drafting&amp;nbsp;views and Sheet&amp;nbsp;views. As per the post&amp;nbsp;in the AUGI forum, you can overlay your 2d drawn information if the 2d &amp;#39;embellished&amp;#39; geometry is in a live 3d &amp;#39;cut&amp;#39;&amp;nbsp;view, then you would be able to display&amp;nbsp;the 3d elements in the 2d live drafting view to allow checking and tracing over if required for coordination. OK.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;But if you need to overlay geometry from elsewhere (say a Drafting view containing some generic details, or something your engineer has given you) you need to in insert/import the Drafting View into&amp;nbsp;a Sheet view. This is pretty complicated compared to the free-and-easy way Mstn (and to a lesser extent ACAD) allows you to Ref attach any file/view to any other file/view.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The way we model, we constantly need to flip between 2d and 3d models. Think of how a joiner makes a piece of furniture (3d). Some tasks are best done in &amp;#39;3d&amp;#39; without any 2d templates. Measure right on the wood block and cut or machine to size. But equally, a lot of joiners will also &amp;#39;draw&amp;#39; or project the design in 2d either onto paper or on the wood itself before cutting, drilling etc.. You see them measuring and comparing between the wood piece and the &amp;#39;blueprints&amp;#39; (2d) all the time.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The same kind of back and forth is needed when developing a design on screen. That is what the Hypermodeling vid above shows very well. You model in 3d, and Ref attach (or jump to it using the Marker menu) to overlay the 3d model in your 2d Drawing model. Everything is snappable and you can synch your 2d elements to align with the 3d model.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Or you can go the other way where you have made a change in the 2d drawing and now need to back-Ref&amp;nbsp;(or Ref) the 2d drawn info into the 3d model and tweak the 3d model to align with the 2d drawing.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The same goes for overlaying to visually inspect and compare the models.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;As a rule of thumb I tried to always not use manufacturers RFA files, they are usually terrible and often contains exported DWG geometry and all other sort of baggage. Instead I always prefer to model my own version of their product using their 2D DWG&amp;#39;s as references. However this leads onto another Revit negative.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The 3D tools available within the family editor are very basic and only really lend themselves to hard-surface modelling. I recall wanting to make my own sanitaryware families and I used an awesome piece of software (which you&amp;#39;ve likely heard of given your use of Rhino) called MOI (Moment of Inspiration). With that I was able to make fantastic little models of Toilets, Sinks etc... save the file as either 3DM or OBJ for import into Revit&amp;#39;s family editor. The problem i discovered, the models imported perfectly, were extremely light in file size and excellent in visual quality however, the family editor would not allow you to assign materials to the imported geometry. Such a frustrating disappointment at the time.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;We use both R*vit and Aecosim in the office to produce BIM-deliverables for some time now. Both apps have their good and bad points. If you think that Aecosim somehow can not produce BIM deliverables then I think that you have been misinformed.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;What is unfortunately true is that some the workflows in Aecosim are far clunkier and more error prone compared to R*vit.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Aecosim&amp;#39;s parametric modeling tools have been around forever (25+ years) and suffer from a fragmented patchwork UX as result. On the bright side, this seems to be slowly being corrected with Connect.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Genuine: yea... I think that you are refering to the pervasive use parameters in R*vit&amp;#39;s Families. I would certainly agree that Revit still has the advantage here. For example. after decades there is still no way to parametrically assign the z-elevation of objects in the model. OTOH, old skool &amp;#39;datum&amp;#39; modeling is alive and well, so much so, we do a huge amount of work in Rhino (previously Sketchup) before importing into Revit because 3d modeling complex shapes in Revit is so clunky... Yes, the imported Rhino geometry does slow R*vit down.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Also, check out Mstn CE&amp;#39;s new Parametric Solids and Constraints tools. Still a bit clunky but very MCAD-like in approach and I think will be a lot more powerful that the constraints tools in R*vit&amp;#39;s Family Editor, in the long run.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Ouch! Sounds like you haven&amp;#39;t been using R*vit long and been drinking out-of-date ADSK kool-aid. Even for middle sized projects, we find that we need to break up or &amp;#39;federate&amp;#39; the model. When it comes to breaking things up, the old ACAD Xref / Mstn Hypermodeling technology beats Revit&amp;#39;s Model Linking hands down in terms of speed and functionality. Something that even ADSK freely admits these days with Project Quantum / Plasma.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Also, Revit bogs down so much that you have to export to Navis to do coordination. I know Model-Linking Navis files is now possible but it is still missing a lot of functionality.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;We also find that we need much more support for our R*vit jobs, requiring a lot more &amp;#39;Model Managers&amp;#39; to clean up the imports/exports, manufacturer&amp;#39;s .rfa&amp;#39;s, managing R&amp;#39;vit Server, untangling busted synch-to-centrals etc etc, compared to the old more CAD-like and less &amp;#39;fly-by-wire&amp;#39; Aecosim/Mstn jobbies.&lt;/p&gt;

I&amp;#39;ve taught many AutoCAD users how to use MicroStation and most ended up agreeing it was the better software package but that conclusion likely wouldn&amp;#39;t have happened without proper support. But it often goes wide beyond an has capabilities that you are listing, like parametric modelling scheduling, detailing, clash detection etc.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Microstation is the technology platform for the BIM Products of Bentley. Like OpenBuildings Designer for Buildings is based on MicroStation and provides the metadata for building objects. (Bentley has similar products for other Industry sectors that carries the IM (Information Modeling) idea into&amp;nbsp; Plant, Road, Rail,...)&lt;br /&gt;While Autodesks AutoCAD and Revit are are different Technologies.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Bentley Products take a federated approach - Each craft works on separate files. In Revit everything is in the database.&lt;br /&gt;So it is BIM but with a differnt approach. Either Software has pros and con.., as always. And there are more manufacturers.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;It depends on what your requirements are. If you are an architect designing straightforward single Buildings you probably prefer Revit.If the company is more into Infrastructures at large it may prefer the Bentley approach. Owner/Operator companies often do the latter.&lt;br /&gt;BTW: You will find a Plugin for Revit that allows to publish buildings as backdrop in MicroStation et.al.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;No secrecy per se, I just don&amp;#39;t conduct&amp;nbsp;private&amp;nbsp;discussions on a public forum and prefer to use the dedicated facility provided by either website for that very purpose.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;That said, I can confirm that I advised my own opinion summarised as below:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;If I was tasked to undertake 2D drawing or 3D Non-parametric modelling, I wouldn&amp;#39;t hesitate to use MicroStation.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;However, if I had a BIM project and could use any software available, I wouldn&amp;#39;t touch&amp;nbsp;OpenBuildings Designer/AECOsim Building Designer with a barge pole (based upon previous experience) The issues with MicroStation CONNECT I understand have parallels with OBD (mostly from reading Jan&amp;#39;s posts where his disappointment is pretty clear) so reading of the multitude of problems just&amp;nbsp;reinforces the decision that for me personally it will always be Revit that I would use for BIM.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Revit is far from perfect (stairs notably are my biggest annoyance), many tasks that are simple in 2D MicroStation require having to create overly complex families (not sure what the Bentley equivalent is, perhaps its just a cell?) for certain objects yet has absolutely no benefit over the 2D option at all but I guess that&amp;#39;s a BIM issue applicable to all software packages. However for many things Revit is great and can be a joy to use, is more user friendly and doesn&amp;#39;t require configuring or faffing about with Datasets and the like. Most importantly to me, its nothing like AutoCAD at all so the learning process was very simple.&amp;nbsp;As a long-term MicroStation user I find it unfortunate that I prefer the Autodesk option but that is just the way it is.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;With that said, I am glad to be currently free from BIM projects and enjoying life back in MicroStation.&lt;/p&gt;
