Hello,
I am using MicroStation v8i SS2.
I am referencing an AutoCAD file into my dgn file, and have set the layers in AutoCAD to be all "color-by-layer". When I reference into MicroStation, select Merge to Master in reference dialog, all my layers and colors reset to "Default" and a white color. If I set all my layers in AutoCAD as color by object, instead of "by layer", then I retain my colors from AutoCAD when Merge to Master, but the layers still revert to the Default level in MicroStation. Is there a way to preserve my layers and colors from AutoCAD?
Colours are going to be hard unless you're using the same colour table.
Levels should come through unless you've locked level creation in the configs.
Are you able to check the config settings you have?
You're looking for something like:
_USTN_CAPABILITY < -CAPABILITY_LEVELS_ALLOW_CREATE
This locks level creation and will move new levels not set in a dgnlib file to the default level.

Bear,
Thanks for that feedback. Changing the config is not likely since I am working with a local DOT workspace and configuration settings.
The only other option is to convert the autocad files to dgn and set up a mapping file that maps the layers to DOT levels.
Is the mapping file created in MicroStation or AutoCAD? Do you have a white paper on how to do that?
It's created in MicroStation. If you go to:
File>Save-As
in the Save-As dialog change the output to dgn and then click Options. You'll then see a Remap tab. Click on this and you'll see it uses a csv file. You can open and edit from the dialog or take a copy, edit it and then open it from the dialog when you're ready.
You should find some good info on it in the help file.
I find when you use save as or export it transfers the acad colour table to maintain the acad colours in the mstn dgn , I prefer to ref merge into a dgn that has the level names and colours already then the acad linework will adopt the active mstn colour table colours and then I can force by level changes....to suit ... especially if the dgn colour table is not std mstn factory but a client ie dot custom one... and I can always use remap via the level manager too... for one offs this approach is best for me, but if there was a need from same source often then csv remap table works best ....or import from a dgn lib level std to force resymbolisation...
