I have transferred my .dgn files from version J to V8i and I've lost all the standards I had. Like the level structure, basic settings. etc. How do I set up a "seed file" so that everything will look and act like it did in J??? Is this a seed file issue??
Its been 2 decades now but I dont remember that anything was lost. How did you "Transfer" the files? The levels shoud be the same (although there were only numbered ones 0-63. What do you mean by Basic Settings? I guess can not expect - or want - that the software will "look and act like it did in J".
You should just be able to "open" the V7 file and upgrade it to V8 when you are asked to.
Your level structure should be in a .dgnlib file.

The biggest issue between J and V8i is that there has been a complete rewrite of the dgn file format.
You could stick with the old 63 levels and not use names, but (as Duncan has said), the best way to manage this is in a dgnlib file. It's not something that really needs to be in the seed.
This is controlled by the config variable MS_DGNLIBLIST.
The other option is to start with a fresh V8i seed file, set up your won dgnlib file and create level names. These can also be maintained in csv files and imported into the dgnlib files as you go.
Same goes for your text and dimensioning with styles. You no longer need to set up text size based on scale. You can have a single style and then set Annotation Scale to change text size.
Which leads to one of the other big changes. No need to just models when you can have your drawing in a sheet model. This can remain 1:1 and just reference in your layouts, details etc. Sheet models also make printing much easier with sheet boundaries.
You could have it all run like V7, but you'd be missing out on a LOT of advances.

Bear, I know my share About the file Formats. But dont you think you scare the heck out of Rick when he is just asking for a V7 file to be opened in V8?
One does need a dgnlib to do that.
And the Levels that were used in V7 (numbered 1-63) should just appear ok in the Level Display dialog.
@Rick: If you could upload one of your V7 files that may help us to shine a light on the issue.
