MicroStation to AutoCAD Conversion

Is there a list somewhere of MicroStation elements that do not convert to AutoCAD? Line style problems, fonts, leaders, annotation scale, cells, etc.

  • not sure of a list but look up the help under save as DWG and you will see all the different settings  under the options also good search keyin

" sharing DGN and  DWG data"  yielded a lot of useful information to consider....

But generally  what happens or you need to consider

DGN linestyles 0-8 are supported all custom linestyles are not ( unless they are already acad ones)

    Cell convert to blocks

non truetype fonts ie Bentley fonts are not supported and  you need the create  shx option so the non true types are converted and acad can then read thenm but you have to allow the acader  be able to find them so I like to send them to the same place the dwgs are ...

for dims here is option for dims to save the active dims settings and create inline leaders if you wan them...

entity mapping has a lot of things listed

and  under advance there re options  to drop things

and create true color from DGN colour numbers.... but this may not be compatible with dwg print settings

    construction elements to const layer

there is loads of settings .. you need to look at them all  maybe print the help and come up with your own setting for different types of dwgs needed....

  • Best is to stick with DWG format only in case of multi-format environment then you will avoid any conversion problems.

    What we do:

    • Use only RGB colors, no color code colors allowed. Still there are issues with invasion of unwanted colors or colorbooks. Seems this issue will never get fixed.
    • Use only text styles as textstyle(none) is not possible in DWG. Unfortunately Textstyles are flawed in Microstation so it is easy to corrupt text styles as for example justification is part of text style which is not the case in DWG. There is only one improvement in CONNECT Edition now regarding text styles so with such pace it will be fixed in CE Update 51 or something.
    • Use Shared cells but it is very inconvenient to manage them.
    • Do not use line codes(0-7), only custom linestyles and also custom linestyle even for 0 linestyle otherwise it gets converted to CONTINUOUS in DWG. Drawback is that custom linestyles are not hardware accelerated and can make file slow for very long lines.

  • Thanks everyone. I have used DWG mode but was just looking for a solid list of items that don't translate.

    • Tags which are not part of cell doesn't translate.
    • Level table override colors are not translated
    • WMS attachments are not allowed in DWG-workmode but can be enabled at least as temporary option.
    • Some raster file formats are not supported as attachments.
    • DGNs can't be directly attached to DWG files but it may depend on version.
    • There are multiple issues with hardcoded ways how Microstation converts cells and point symbols(in custom lines) so it may rename cells if they seem not to be identical with no option to change that. Also when creating custom lines create with same point symbol names as otherwise it will create DWG file which uses Microstation point symbol naming and these won't show in AutoCAD because the shx file will not contain the same names. Best is to create a LIN file and import it in Microstation DGN as is so it will use same shx file as AutoCAD or work in dwg only so it uses ACAD linetypes.
    • DWG doesn't have automatic custom line centering so need to create two linestyles for short and long lines.
    • Some dwg custom lines may produce artifacts in DGN preview
    • User attributes may be lost on translation.
