Performance Enhancement - File Opening Time for MicroStation CONNECT Edition Update 13 Vs V8i SS4

I know that this has been briefly discussed in another post but @KarishmaAnthony please can you carry out the same comparison tests on a win7, i7 pc (3-4 years old), with 24GB RAM and a standard HDD, using a 1mb file. The origianl tsts are al your blog at https://communities.bentley.com/products/microstation/b/microstation_blog/posts/performance-enhancement---file-opening-time-for-microstation-connect-edition-update-13-vs-v8i-ss4

I would suggest that this is a more realistic test. Look forward to your revised tests.

  • Are we going to get a response to this

And not even a reply to say that Bentley are working on this, with a progress update. If nothing else it's just disrespectful!!

When are we going to get the new test results for more realistic pc spec and file sizes?

  • As I said, all of the above is part of ongoing efforts to both improve our tests and MicroStation CONNECT Edition's general performance so it is not final. We will write a new post or update the existing one when we have completed and - again - please, help us by sending some of the data you are using as the basis of your complaints.

Are you able to issue this as we are now another 3 weeks on?

  • Did these updated results ever get issued or have they been forgotten about?

If they haven't been issued when are we likely to see them?

  • It is entirely possible that no data sets were provided, as Marco repeatedly requested, and Bentley's datasets work fine and support the marketing.
Personally, U13.1 seems acceptable for our work. We had an issue at U10 and 11 with slow files that contained Raster references, but that was it. Once we moved seriously affected users off the latentcy affected Network access, GTG.
Seek and ye shall find, but give and ye shall be rewarded.

  • Thanks Gregory,

you nailed it. After asking several times, we have only received two examples, from some users that were not even that vocal about this issue. They both were complex (many worksets, multiple products, networks, etc )setups and not easy to related to pure file opening times. We are investigating these of course but they won't be directly comparable to more straight forward cases that most of you guys may be dealing with.

Stuart, if you could send us your test files and some more details of your setup, it will be very beneficial. As I mentioned, all data will be kept absolutely confidential and included in our test plans to make sure there won't be regressions in future releases.

We have also made some further improvements in the upcoming Update 14.

    Regards,

  • I did provide link here to one of real world examples where no improvements are visible. The file which works great in old v8 but slow in v8i and CE.

But any file can be used for test just take the ones which are less than 10MB from delivered examples. Just compare file open with cold start and then try to switch between files and check results between v8i and CE. I recently opened v8 2004 on some old computer and it is blazing fast so for at least 2D there is no real improvement where it should be. Microstation Powerdraft is also Microstation but not extensively used for 3D production and even lacks 3D tools so 2D drafting should still benefit from CE. Honestly when I try to open file from cold I still choose "open with" and decide if it is more productive to open in v8i or to try to wake up the sleeping dinosaur(aka CE).
