Level Number Map

Remember the old level number map. Microstation got rid of it quite awhile ago. Now that I finally upgraded to Connect...has anybody written anything so I can get it back?

  • has anybody written anything so I can get it back?

You mean the 1..63 levels puzzle square?

Microstation got rid of it quite awhile ago

Yes, because the V8 DGN format offers a humanly-incomprehensible two billion possible levels.  That would be a much larger puzzle than was possible in the V7 DGN era.

has anybody written anything so I can get it back?

Each and every level must have a unique name.  Level numbers in a V8 DGN file are optional.  What kind of user interface design would satisy your need?

  • Hello Jon: I am a one-man company and the way I learned is still the way I like it. I don't get into massive projects that have hundreds of levels. I am a machine designer, so the original 63 levels that were available back in the day are enough for me. I also don't use names. I work with heavy machinery, but not a lot of parts. Mostly original work so I don't want to mess with names because I don't know any names while I am dreaming up what something is going to look like.

So rather than scroll through a long list it is easiest for me to just turn everything off real quick and turn on only what I want to see. So the original 63 level number map with circles is great for me.

  • do you draw everything on one level ?

How do you determine what goes on which level in the design file ?

The view display should give you the same ability to quickly turn off/on levels - or you can always right click on an element in the file and turn it off and not even open the level display dialog.

  • Don't draw everything on one level but many designs may have only 10 or 40...not hundreds. And I can turn them off easy enough..turning them on though is a bit more cumbersome if I have to scroll down a list..Just a user preference really and it would seem so simple to have..I am just not learned in writing custom stuff. Dont see why it was eliminated but I am not a programmer.

  • I too miss the simplicity of level numbers, but upgrading to names was pretty much a necessity. Microstation still assigns a number to each level, but they no longer function as before, ie you can't say of=140 for a layer called Wall that happens to be number 140. That being said, you can simply create or rename your levels to plain old numbers. Then they will function as before. When you bring a file forward to v8, it will change Level "1" to "Level 1", you can just rename it.
