[CONNECT] Raster sequencing 3D file with "Use File Order"

CONNECT Edition 10.13.00.48

We are currently transitioning staff from V8i to CONNECT and have been struggling with raster sequencing.  We use 3D files but use "Use File Order" in the Display Styles setting to override the display element elevations, using the reference file sequence order.  This always worked in V8i because the rasters were on the background plane and would remain behind all of the elements.

In CONNECT, we are not able to get rasters to go behind other elements even when the raster is set the background plane.  If we unselect "Use File Order", everything seems to work as intended.  Going one step further, if we reference the raster (with file order selected), it seems to stay with the file order depth and not send the raster to the background plane.

We have found a workaround and that is to place the raster into a new model and then reference that model and sequence it to the bottom in the reference file sequence order.  Since we have literally thousands of v8 era files that use "Use File Order", turning that off to utilize a raster is not realistic plus it changes our file's look and that is not acceptable.  We also want users to stick to one version of MicroStation for drafting to minimize other issues.

Has anyone came across this issue and is it a CONNECT issue or is it a setting or config I missed?

Thanks! -Brian

  • I cannot say I have a solution for you specifically, beyond that a VBA would be your better chance to modify large numbers of DRGs at once, but will say, welcome to the CE club. It is a road with happy joys, and sad downsides (getting better though)

    1. You may be able to track down a VBA writer who could quote you a fixed price to change all your DRGs overnight. Chalk up to the cost of migration.

    2. Have you tried Priority? If you are using LEVELs for your Raster, level priority may resolve. Priority can be applied to References. Display Priority in Raster Manager?

The combination of Priority is mind numbing. If feasible, this could be easier to effect through Macros.

  • Thank you for your reply, Greg.   The problem is I don't want to modify the files.  We need to be able to use the File Order to plot our drawings in the 3d environment where they were created.  I did look into priority as well but priority is not an option in 3d files because it uses the z-axis.  We also want to bring in, say aerial imagery from a reference, and not have it cover other references sequenced at a lower depth.

  • just to clarify - if you open a file in V8i everything looks as needed with the elements and raster in the design, but if the same file is opened in CONNECT it displays incorrectly ?

    OR

are you attempting the same workflows in CONNECT when working with raster files and not getting the same results as you do in V8i ?

(IE: go thru steps 1,2,3, etc... in V8i and it works, then the same steps in CONNECT do not)

  • Tim,

I believe I want to say "yes" to both of your questions.   The best I can do to describe what we seem to be seeing is in the image below.  It seems like when "Use File Order" is selected, the rasters ignore the background plane (below all references as we experienced in v8-2004 and v8i) and seems to apply a raster foreground/design/background plane with the individual file.

If we unselect, "Use File Order" the rasters seem to revert to the background plane we expect to see, but, our elevated elements (ie: topo contours, draft elements) automatically move to the "top" since it is using the z-axis to determine element order when plotting.

    Hope this helps explain it.
