Edit a Cells in MicroStation

How can I edit a Cell in MicroStation to have all instances of that Cell in my drawing to be updated dynamically?

  • Thanks all, partially answered. I understand the replacement of a cell, and now doing it globally. However, I am experiencing an issue with how to modify (edit) when an instances of the cell I created is populated in the drawing. Please notice the "Open for editing" is grayed out, leaving this cell inoperable to modify. See the example of this on the left side figure attached. If I create a cell and do not place that cell into the drawing, I still can modify the cell in the example to the right figure. Once I place the cell, I can no longer modify (edit) that cell with the procedure I mentioned. Only thing I could do is delete all the instances of the cell in every location, then go to the dialog box and delete it from there, then I could do modifications to that cell. I want to know how to modify (edit) a cell that I created that is already placed inside my drawing multiple locations without deleting it everywhere. There has got to be a better way to do this for sure, I must be missing something. If you can explain also using screen shot examples, I would appreciate it! Thanks all!

  • That's a shared cell, I've tried but never found a method to modify a shared cell definition. So, perhaps, harking back to the original question, you can't.

  • Bob, thanks for the reply..... I was afraid that this was going to be the answer because I can't find anything about it nowhere.

  • You can make changes to a shared cell by following these steps

    1. For this example the shared cell is named VALVE
    2. From within the current DGN containing instances of the shared cell VALVE, create a new model and give it a name like NEW_VALVE  and enable Can be placed as cell
    3. Switch to the NEW_VALVE model
    4. Use the Place Cell command with Use Shared Cells checked and place the VALVE shared cell in an unrotated (or top) view at xy=0,0,0
    5. Drop the VALVE shared cell to its geometry
    6. Make the desired modifications to the geometry
    7. Switch back to the original model containing the shared cell instances
    8. Attach the current design file as a cell library
    9. in the Cell Library dialog, Uncheck Use Shared Cells and set the NEW_VALVE as the active cell
    10. Use the Replace Cell command with Mode:Global to replace the shared cell VALVE with the active cell NEW_VALVE
    11. The shared cell definition for VALVE will be replace with NEW_VALVE and all shared instances of VALVE will become shared instances of NEW_VALVE

  • Well I saved that off to my self support folder. It will come in handy some day.

  • great. and now, if only MS had a tool to make this in one or two clicks ...
BTW, when V8 was breand new thing there was a discussion of possibilities of in-place cell editing. which we still don't have. however, how complicated would be to add it?
