How can I edit a Cell in MicroStation to have all instances of that Cell in my drawing to be updated dynamically?
Thanks all, partially answered. I understand the replacement of a cell, and now doing it globally. However, I am experiencing an issue with how to modify (edit) when an instances of the cell I created is populated in the drawing. Please notice the "Open for editing" is grayed out, leaving this cell inoperable to modify. See the example of this on the left side figure attached. If I create a cell and do not place that cell into the drawing, I still can modify the cell in the example to the right figure. Once I place the cell, I can no longer modify (edit) that cell with the procedure I mentioned. Only thing I could do is delete all the instances of the cell in every location, then go to the dialog box and delete it from there, then I could do modifications to that cell. I want to know how to modify (edit) a cell that I created that is already placed inside my drawing multiple locations without deleting it everywhere. There has got to be a better way to do this for sure, I must be missing something. If you can explain also using screen shot examples, I would appreciate it! Thanks all!
PS. I am Using MicroStation V8i Series 4 08.11.09.829
That's a shared cell, I've tried but never found a method to modify a shared cell definition. So, perhaps, harking back to the original question, you can't.

Well I saved that off to my self support folder. It will come in handy some day.
great. and now, if only MS had a tool to make this in one or two clicks ...BTW, when V8 was breand new thing there was a discussion of possibilities of in-place cell editing. which we still don't have. however, how complicated would be to add it?

I have created a tripplenested cell (cell in cell in cell), then used the below mechanism. (save my dgn as dwg to get shared cells)
I have edited the cell lib that resulted from the export. Then replaced the cell. Worked fine for me

Thanks Ron, I tried your procedure, I understand it and it works in MS .dgn files. However, when I am trying this same procedure in .dwg work flow, I cannot create a new dgn model because only type selectable is "sheet" and "sheet from seed" and the rest is grayed out. (see attached) I don't know how that would work for cells. Note sure if there is a configuration setting for this? I use both AutoCAD and Microstation and it is much simpler to work and edit blocks in AutoCAD then the procedure outlined for MS. That is a bout the only thing I like about AC is the ability to do blocks and easy edits for them. I do not know why it has to be that difficult in MS to modify a cell? Programming issues I guess? I wonder if the newer version(s) will address this? Thanks again for your time!

DWG files don't support multiple models. When you use MicroStation in DWG mode, it applies that restriction imposed by the DWG file format.

You'll have to ask AutoDesk about providing multiple models in a DWG file.

A DGN model is a DGN cell. A DGN cell is a DGN model. A DGN file contains one or more models or cells (they can coexist in the same DGN file).
Because DWG lacks the facility for multiple models, you must modify Ron's proposed workflow Step 2. Instead of creating a new model in the active DGN file, you must use another DGN file as the cell library.

Thanks Jon, I understand.
I though that if you have a shared ell used all over your drg if you edit one manually inplace like text thenthey all update automatically main reason I dislike shared cells..
I think to do what you want
drop all the shared cells to normal cells.
copy one and drop to geometry ie nolonger a cell then edit how you want it to look, then turn it into a cell but first movie it 0,0,0 and then attach your cell library and create/ turn it into a cell old school way now if you name it the same as the other cells you can easily use the replace cell option in the cells pallete...and you'll have a cell in library for future use...

The OP has revealed that he's working in DWG mode. A DWG file accepts only shared cells (AutoCAD blocks): it doesn't understand MicroStation's concept of normal cells.
oops missed that detail sorry folks...
