Selecting a solution for a circle (when two are available)

Hello

When drawing Circles using the 'edge' method, I'm having a hard time getting MicroStation to select the solution I want.

For example, if I'm drawing a circle with an undefined radius, that is tangent to two lines and has a point on one of the lines, the two solutions should be based on the small angle or large angle produced by the lines/tangents.  Similarly if I have a defined radius and one tangent, with a point on that tangent, there is a solution for above and below the line.

When I try to draw circles with this method, I almost always end up with the circle I don't want.  Sometimes a command is available to "Tap <alt> for next", however it doesn't always work, and doesn't always show up.

I've tried varying the order and location of points/tangents that are selected, and I know my solution exists, but often don't/can't get the solution needed.

I feel like I'm missing something obvious here, can anyone help me out?

Thanks for your time.

(P.S. i'm using V8i SS2)

  • Not quite sure if I understand you right but what if you use Tanget Snap when you identify the points on both lines? It seems to work.

  • Thanks for the reply.

Yes, I'm using the tangent snap to identify my points on the line.

I suppose the issue is constancy with which it works.  Sometimes the 'alt' command lets me select the next solution, sometimes it shows up in the dialog box but doesn't do anything, and sometimes it doesn't show up at all.

  • Seems there is some inconsistency.

I also get "This snap cannot be combined with previous snaps or locks" message at some points. Also it seems to lock on "identify first point on circle" if using tangent snap. However I can place all solutions.

Can you make a video to show how it works for you?

  • FWIW
i've found that it helps to Tap <alt> and then move the cursor slightly. The next solution only seems to become active once the cursor moves a bit. Each time I tap <alt> the Solution in the Place Circle dialog changes, but if I don't move the cursor it doesn't activate the solution.

  • Thank you for the responses.

I do tap the 'alt' to try and switch between solutions, but often it just doesn't work (it almost seems random).

Here is a video of what I'm doing (note I'm hitting alt and moving my mouse).
