In my 30+ years of working in MicroStation I always entered Underscore characters "_" in the text editor for the enter data fields.
In CONNECT Edition this no longer seems to work. Entering underscores in the text editor does not create enter data fields as in past versions. The only way to create new enter data fields is to use Insert Enter Data Field from the text editor pop-up menu. Checking my user prefs the ED Character is set to the underscore character.
Files from previous versions of MicroStation where the underscores were used still work in CONNECT.
Yes, I know enter data fields are obsolete, but they are still part of many client workflows.
Has entering the underscore character for enter data fields been disabled?
When placing, you must throw in some junk, highlight, then right click to select Enter Data Field.

I have always wondered in what workflows are the data fields used? The data fields tools are so counter intuitive that have not found how it is actually supposed to work.
They are old, old technology, used as placeholders for future text. I saw them used most often for tables. It's nothing that was fully embraced by any place I ever worked, but they had their uses - they were just too clunky for us to get heavily involved with.

I still see them a lot in title blocks. Prior to Tags that's the way it was done.
I also still see them as part of other cells. In V7 and earlier you had to drop cells to edit text in cells, with enter data fields you could modify those in cells without first dropping the cell.

We used to use them all the time, 20 years ago. Don't think I've had a need for one in the last 10 years at least
