Setting a Text size while inserting an embedded excel file into microstation

Im inserting an embedded excel file into microstation, once I select the place in model space can I somehow control he size of the table based on the text size?

I didn't see how to set an microstation text size that would equal an excel text size.

I've been working with autocad for the last 25 yrs and have not worked in MicroStation in about 20 yrs

Any help would be appreciated

Im using V8i

  • You can't control the text size of an Excel table from Microstation - you can only make those adjustments in Excel. Microstation only displays the spreadsheet, it can't edit it directly whatsoever.

Since my standard Microstation text height on a plotted piece of paper is 0.12", I work with 12 point text in excel. You may need to dig into your text styles and printed text sizes a little to see what works for you.

  • Ok, I thought since Autocad allows you to change the text size, MicroStation would allow you to change the size.

    Thanks for the Help

  • I was unaware that AutoCAD could edit Excel files - or are you referring to Tables, not linked spreadsheets? If you are looking for that functionality, you may want to check out MicroStation CONNECT.

Either way, Microstation V8i can only change CAD elements.

  • Autodesk integration with Excel is one feature that is superior. Has been for a long long time.

You can however paste embedded by size, you may need to play with it to get desired result.

  • Thanks for the Input. The project manager wants linked so they can make the changes and we then just update the link

  • Note that if the excel file is updated, and you don't  know it then when you open the dgn in mstn it doenst update automatically  and you then have to use the update links feature.. unfortunately though if the excel editor makes it bigger ie extra rows and columns these extra rows and columns are not  seen.. I don't remember if there is a way to make it update the extra cells..

another drawback is if the linked excel is deleted or moved mstn treats it like a missing xref... that's why I personally  prefer embedded over linked.. also easier to provide dgn with the excel file aleady inside it rather  than having to remember it needs to go with the dgns to client... but you got to convince your boss and your clients  that this is better.. ( FYI  I use the linked until delivery and no more changes then I embed it) .... no tested in CE just V8i.... but the linked auto update excel links  never worked for any previous versions so I assume it still doesn't work for CE...

That's because the underlying technology, Microsoft OLE, is (a) ancient and (b) fragile.  OLE requires a fully-qualified file path.  It does not evaluate environment variables, for example, which would permit more flexibility.

Since OLE is used so often, it puzzles me why Microsoft hasn't introduced something less inflexible.
