Create a parametric cell for labels

Hi,

I am trying to create a parametric cell for a label.

My label needs to contain 3 text fields that are linked to items or element properties. These text fields are separated with vertical lines.

I would like to constrain the size of the box to the lenght of the text.

I managed to build this cell using constraints between the edge of the rectangle and the edge of the text.

But when I place it using place label tool, the constraints don't work, see example below :

If I change the cell from graphic to parametric, then the cell is not available anymore in the drop down list for labels.

Do you think it is possible to achieve what I am trying to do ? Or am I stuck with fixed size label ?

Thanks for your help.

  • Hi Elise,

We are very interested in your workflows, would you please share the dgn file you created and provide some details about your requirements?(one request we see is make Parametric model available when placing label, could you please explain a little bit about what's your requirement about constrain text fields?) we'll look into it to see what we can do to achieve that.

  • Hi Grace,

    Thank you for your answer.

What I would like to do really is constrain the size of the label box to the text fields inside so it will resize depending on the size of the text. Similarly to what is happening if you use a note with a dimension style that has got a frame around it.

Attached is an example cell library and dgn file with some elements to test it. These elements have items attached and the text fields are linked to the items values. I used a text favorite when creating my label cell.

In this example I have set up the cell to graphic in order to be able to place it as a label. I think it needs to be set on parametric for the constraints to work, but in this case I don't have it available in the list when I want to place a label.

Regarding the constrains themselves in my cell, I was not really able to achieve what I wanted as I can't place enough constrains to make it work properly. I can constrain the box and lines to the text but not the other way around. Ideally I would like my second and third piece of text to also move when the first piece of text change size.

I think having this possibility will be a huge step forward in the use of items and labels.

This will prevent to have to create a very long list of labels with different sizes.

    Best regards,

  • Hi Elise,

Thank you for your files and explanation, we have filed a defect to display Parametric cell when placing label, and we'll look into the constrain text issue.
